Mutun Talib al-Ilm - al-Mustawa al-Thani (Texts for the Student of Knowledge – Level Two) is the second level in a graded pedagogical series of foundational Islamic didactic texts edited and compiled by Abd al-Muhsin ibn Muhammad al-Qasim, Imam and Khatib of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina .
Context and Scope
The volume belongs to the overarching Mutun Talib al-Ilm curriculum, which encompasses twenty-two essential texts spanning multiple Islamic disciplines arranged across six successive levels . The project was conceived to provide students of Islamic knowledge with a structured pathway for memorizing core texts gradually and systematically .
Level Two comprises three foundational treatises across the disciplines of Quran recitation, Islamic jurisprudence, and creed :
- Tuhfat al-Atfal wa-l-Ghilman fi Tajwid al-Qur'an by Sulayman al-Jamzuri, a versified primer on the rules of Quranic recitation .
- Shurut al-Salah wa-Arkanuha wa-Wajibatuha, an introductory treatise detailing the conditions, pillars, and obligations of ritual prayer by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab .
- Kitab al-Tawhid alladhi huwa Haqq Allah 'ala al-'Ibad, a foundational treatise on monotheism and Islamic creed, also by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab .
Editorial Method and Pedagogical Features
The texts in the first five levels of the curriculum were critically established through collation with numerous manuscript witnesses—selected from hundreds of manuscripts gathered from libraries and private collections globally . The compiler provided full vocalization (tashkīl) and modern punctuation aligned with the texts' semantic meanings . To facilitate ease of memorization for students, apparatus notes detailing variant readings were excluded from this student edition and documented separately .
The work incorporates a practical guide outlining daily memorization routines and systematic review schedules . For memorization, it recommends limiting daily quotas—such as up to five lines of prose, three lines of poetry, or three hadiths—and repeating the passage twenty times after the dawn prayer, repeating it twenty times after the afternoon or sunset prayer, and reviewing the previous day's material twenty times before commencing a new lesson . It also lays down structured review paces, recommending reciting memorized portions to others and maintaining daily reviews so that all memorized treatises are recited from memory at least once a month .
To aid comprehension, the compiler recommends specific commentaries for the Level Two texts :
- Fath al-Aqfal, Sulayman al-Jamzuri's own commentary on Tuhfat al-Atfal .
- Sharh Kitab Shurut al-Salah by Abd al-Aziz Ibn Baz .
- Hashiyat Kitab al-Tawhid by Ibn Qasim .
In addition, the work recommends two supplementary books for reading alongside Level Two: al-Kaba'ir by al-Dhahabi and al-Fusul fi Sirat al-Rasul by Ibn Kathir .
Implementation
The curriculum is taught and memorized through dedicated study circles established year-round at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, catering to students of various ages, as well as through distance-learning programs .
