Mutun Talib al-Ilm - al-Mustawa al-Tamhidi

Mutun Talib al-Ilm: al-Mustawa al-Tamhidi (Arabic: متون طالب العلم - المستوى التمهيدي, lit. 'Foundational Texts for the Student of Knowledge: Preparatory Level') is an introductory Islamic curriculum text compiled and edited by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim, imam and preacher (khatib) of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina (al-Masjid al-Nabawi) . It serves as the opening, preparatory tier of the broader Mutun Talib al-Ilm educational series, focusing on authentic prophetic remembrances (adhkar), invocations, and Islamic manners (adab) .

Purpose and Scope

The broader Mutun Talib al-Ilm project was designed by al-Qasim as a progressive memorization curriculum comprising twenty-two foundational texts divided across six levels . Al-Qasim designated al-Adhkar wal-Adab as the preparatory level (al-mustawa al-tamhidi) preceding the core disciplines because students of Islamic knowledge serve as role models for others; they are thus in foremost need of adorning themselves with Islamic etiquette in their conduct and maintaining constant remembrance of God . To meet the varying needs of learners, al-Qasim also produced an abridged version of the work titled Mukhtasar al-Adhkar wal-Adab .

Structure and Content

The compiler arranged the text into distinct thematic units, prioritizing sound (sahih) hadiths, organizing them by chapters, and glossing difficult vocabulary (gharib) :

  • Virtues (al-Fada'il): An introductory section highlighting the merits of seeking sacred knowledge, learning and teaching the Quran, and engaging in the remembrance of God .
  • Remembrances (al-Adhkar): A collection of daily and devotional supplications, covering the call to prayer (al-adhan), entering and exiting the mosque, opening invocations of ritual prayer (du'a al-istiftah), supplications for bowing (al-ruku'), rising from bowing, and prostration (al-sujud), as well as seeking refuge against distraction and whispering (al-waswasa) during prayer .
  • Etiquettes (al-Adab): A section dedicated to proper Islamic conduct and interpersonal manners .

Editorial Method and Instruction

In preparing the Mutun Talib al-Ilm series, al-Qasim collated and verified the texts against manuscript copies gathered from libraries across the world . The texts were fully vocalized with vowel markings (dabt bi-l-shakl) and formatted with punctuation aligned with their textual meanings . For the student editions, footnotes recording manuscript variants were removed to facilitate memorization, while critical apparatuses were preserved in separate editions .

A dedicated department was established at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina to teach and test the memorization of these texts for students of all ages throughout the year, alongside distance-learning circles and online audio explanations .
