Mutun Talib al-Ilm - al-Mustawa al-Rabi (Arabic: متون طالب العلم - المستوى الرابع, lit. 'Texts for the Student of Knowledge – Level Four') is a pedagogical compilation of classical Islamic foundational texts edited and compiled by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim, Imam and Khatib of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina . It forms the fourth stage of the six-level Mutun Talib al-Ilm curriculum designed for the structured memorization and study of core Islamic disciplines .
Purpose and Textual Methodology
The work was compiled as part of a graded curriculum of twenty-two fundamental treatises designed to help students master and memorize core scholarly principles across multiple Islamic fields . The texts in the first five levels of the curriculum were critically edited against 230 selected manuscripts chosen from more than 600 manuscripts collected from libraries worldwide .
To facilitate student memorization, the vocalized text is printed with modern punctuation and stripped of critical apparatus and manuscript variant footnotes, with textual variants documented separately in a distinct reference edition .
Contents and Structure
Level Four comprises four classical texts spanning jurisprudence fundamentals, wisdom poetry, inheritance law, and creed :
- al-Waraqat (The Papers), a foundational primer in legal theory (usul al-fiqh) .
- ‘Unwan al-Hikam (The Address of Wisdom), an educational poem on morals and adab .
- Bughyat al-Bahith ‘an Jumal al-Mawarith, widely known as al-Rahbiyyah, a didactic poem on Islamic inheritance law (fara’id) .
- al-‘Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah (The Tahawiyyah Creed), a classical statement of Sunni theology .
Pedagogical Features
The volume includes dedicated introductory guides outlining standardized memorization and retention techniques :
- Memorization Technique: Recommends modest daily portions (three hadiths, a prose passage not exceeding five lines, or three poetic verses) recited twenty times after the dawn prayer, repeated twenty times after late afternoon or sunset, and reviewed twenty times the following morning before beginning a new portion .
- Revision Technique: A cumulative daily review schedule designed to reinforce retention through repeated cycles and oral recitation to others .
- Recommended Commentaries: Lists suggested reference commentaries for study, including Sharh al-Waraqat by Abd Allah al-Fawzan, Hashiyat al-Rahbiyyah by Ibn Qasim, and Sharh al-‘Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah by Ibn Abi al-‘Izz .
- Supplementary Reading: Recommends accompanying reading for students at Level Four, specifically Hadi al-Arwah by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya and Sayd al-Khatir by Ibn al-Jawzi .
Implementation
The curriculum is taught in structured memorization circles established within al-Masjid al-Nabawi for students of various age groups, as well as through remote learning programs .
