Mutun Talib al-Ilm - al-Mustawa al-Khamis - 2 (Arabic: متون طالب العلم - المستوى الخامس - ٢, lit. 'Texts for the Student of Knowledge – Level Five – 2') is a critical edition of the Hanbali legal manual Zad al-Mustaqni fi Ikhtisar al-Muqni by Musa ibn Ahmad al-Hajjawi (d. 968 AH), edited by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim, imam and preacher at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina . It forms the second volume of the fifth tier of Mutun Talib al-Ilm, a graded memorization curriculum of classical scholarly primers .

Context and Curriculum

Mutun Talib al-Ilm is a pedagogical program organized by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim to facilitate the memorization and mastery of foundational Islamic disciplines . It comprises twenty-two texts arranged progressively across six tiers: a preparatory level, four intermediate levels, a fifth advanced level, and a sixth level devoted to hadith collections . Due to the substantial length of the works in the fifth and sixth levels, each text in those tiers was published as an independent volume .

Level Five contains three major texts:

  1. Bulugh al-Maram by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (Volume 1)
  2. Zad al-Mustaqni' by al-Hajjawi (Volume 2)
  3. Al-Khulasah fi al-Nahw (Alfiyyat Ibn Malik) by Ibn Malik (Volume 3)

Editorial Method and Features

In editing the texts for the first five levels of the project, al-Qasim relied on 160 manuscripts selected from more than 500 collected from libraries and repositories worldwide . For Zad al-Mustaqni', the critical text was established using a manuscript copy read directly before the author, alongside other witness copies .

The editorial work prioritized student memorization:

  • The entire Arabic text was fully vocalized with vowel markings (dabt bi-l-shakl) and punctuated according to semantic units .
  • Marginal notes detailing textual variants between manuscripts were excluded from this student edition to ensure an uncluttered text for memorization, with those variants documented in a separate critical edition .
  • The volume includes introductory guidance outlining practical methods for memorizing and reviewing classical texts, along with suggested commentaries and readings corresponding to each curriculum tier .

A dedicated department was established at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina for students to memorize these editions, alongside distance-learning study circles .
