Mutun Talib al-Ilm – al-Idafiya – 5 (متون طالب العلم – الإضافية – ٥) is a critical student edition of the hadith terminology poem al-Tabsirah wa-al-Tadhkirah fi ‘Ulum al-Hadith (popularly known as Alfiyyat al-‘Iraqi) by Abu al-Fadl Abd al-Rahim ibn al-Husayn al-'Iraqi (d. 806 AH / 1404 CE), edited by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim, Imam and Khatib of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina .
Subject and Scope
The volume constitutes the fifth installment within the supplementary series (al-Mutun al-Idafiyya) of the Mutun Talib al-Ilm curriculum . The text featured is al-'Iraqi's poetic abridgment and versification of Ibn al-Salah's Ma‘rifat Anwa‘ ‘Ulum al-Hadith, composed in the rajaz meter and spanning 1,002 lines . In addition to summarizing Ibn al-Salah's treatise, al-'Iraqi incorporated supplementary scholarly clarifications and points of rectification .
Editorial Method and Sources
The edition was established using seventeen manuscript copies: eight containing the bare poetic text and nine embedded within al-'Iraqi's own commentary . The primary textual witnesses included:
- An autograph copy in al-'Iraqi's handwriting housed at al-Azhar Library, read before him by his son Abu Hatim Muhammad and Nur al-Din al-Haythami .
- Multiple early manuscripts transcribed by al-'Iraqi's direct students and verified against his original, including copies penned by Muhibb al-Din al-Qalqashandi, al-Busiri, and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Salah, bearing al-'Iraqi's certificates of audition and authorization (ijaza) .
- Copies recited before Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Sibt Ibn al-Ajami carrying their handwritten validations .
In formatting the work for memorization, the editor printed the author's additions to Ibn al-Salah's text in red font . Footnotes documenting textual variants, commentaries on obscure terms, and critical referencing were omitted from this specific print to provide students with a clear text for rote learning, while being preserved in a separate scholarly edition . The editor completed this work on 10 Muharram 1442 AH .
