Musnad al-Shamiyyin (The Hadith Compilation of the Syrians) is a hadith collection compiled by the hadith master Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani (260–360 AH / 873–971 CE) that gathers the prophetic narrations transmitted through the scholars and transmitters of the Levant (Bilad al-Sham) . The book is also referred to in classical bibliography sources as Hadith al-Shamiyyin .

Scope and Organization

The work focuses specifically on preserving the regional tradition of Syrian hadith transmitters, reflecting al-Tabarani’s extensive travels and studies throughout the Levant and his documentation of local chains of transmission . Rather than organizing exclusively by the primary Companion narrators as in standard universal musnads, al-Tabarani arranged the collection around the individual Syrian narrators and regional traditionists, grouping the traditions transmitted through each narrator under dedicated chapter headings (e.g., Mā intahā ilaynā min musnad...) .

The narrations preserved in the work encompass legal rulings, theological matters, ethical teachings, and traditions concerning the virtues and end-times events associated with the Levant, Damascus, and surrounding regions .

Transmission and Editions

The book was preserved and transmitted through prominent hadith authorities in subsequent generations, including transmission chains descending from Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani from al-Tabarani, and later through Abu Ali al-Haddad, al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Attar, and Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Muqayyir .

The text was edited in modern print by Hamdi Abd al-Majid al-Salafi and published by Mu'assasat al-Risala in Beirut (first published in 1405 AH / 1984 CE, with subsequent printings in 1409 AH / 1989 CE and 1417 AH / 1996 CE) .
