Mukhtasar Fath Rabb al-Arbab bima Uhmila fi Lubb al-Lubab min Wajib al-Ansab (The Abridgment of the Opening of the Lord of Lords Regarding Essential Genealogies Omitted in Lubb al-Lubab) is a treatise on Arabic genealogical surnames and relative adjectives (nisbas) by the Medinan scholar Abbas al-Madani (d. 1346 AH / 1927–1928 CE; another source notes d. after 1343 AH) .

Background and Purpose

The book is an abridgment prepared by Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Sayyid Radwan al-Madani from his own larger work, titled Fath Rabb al-Arbab . Its primary objective was to supplement and record the essential genealogical affiliations, tribal origins, and regional nisbas that were left out of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's well-known genealogical lexicon, Lubb al-Lubab fi Tahrir al-Ansab . The author completed the composition of this abridgment on 30 Jumada al-Ula 1345 AH (December 1926 CE) .

Structure and Method

The work is organized alphabetically according to the standard Arabic dictionary arrangement of entries (huruf), beginning with the letter Hamzah . Under each alphabetical section, the author lists omitted relative adjectives (such as al-Ajrumiyyah, al-Azadhani, al-Afughali, al-Aleyshi, al-Awi, al-Aydini, al-Abbariyyah, al-Abtahi, al-Ujhuri, and al-Ahsa'i), followed by concise explanations indicating their geographic locations, towns, villages, or attributed individuals .

In the colophon of the work, al-Madani explains his methodology, noting that he restricted his compilations strictly to reliable and authoritative reference books, and whenever he encountered a point not resolved in written sources, he verified it directly with knowledgeable experts and scholars in the field .

Publication History

The work was first printed in 1345 AH (1926–1927 CE) at Matba'at al-Ma'ahid in Cairo, Egypt, comprising seventy pages . It has subsequently been published and reprinted as an appendix appended to al-Suyuti's Lubb al-Lubab fi Tahrir al-Ansab, including an edition issued in Beirut in 1411 AH / 1991 CE .
