Abbas al-Madani (d. 1346 AH / 1927–1928 CE) was a scholar and genealogist from Medina, best known for his genealogical supplement Fath Rabb al-Arbab bima Uhmila fi Lubb al-Lubab min Wajib al-Ansab.
Lineage and Education
His full name was Abbas ibn Muhammad (also cited as Muhammad Amin) ibn Ahmad ibn al-Sayyid Radwan al-Madani. He was raised in a scholarly family in Medina and received hadith transmissions and traditional Islamic learning from several prominent scholars of the Hijaz and beyond.
Among his principal teachers was his father, Muhammad Amin ibn Ahmad Radwan al-Madani, through whom he transmitted hadith via a chain reaching scholars such as Abd al-Ghani al-Dihlawi and Abd al-Ghani al-Damyati. He also narrated from Ahmad ibn Isma'il al-Barzanji, Muhammad ibn Sulayman Hasballah, Falih ibn Muhammad al-Zahiri, Abd al-Jalil ibn Abd al-Salam Barradah al-Hanafi, Abd al-Qadir al-Khatib al-Tarabulusi, Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Husayn al-Habashi, Abd al-Rahman al-Shirbini, Salim al-Bishri, and Abd al-Haqq ibn Shah Muhammad al-Ilahabadi.
Scholarly Contribution
Al-Madani specialized in the study of Arabic genealogy, tribal affiliations, and relative surnames (nisbas). His primary contribution to the field was Fath Rabb al-Arbab bima Uhmila fi Lubb al-Lubab min Wajib al-Ansab, along with its abridgment Mukhtasar Fath Rabb al-Arbab. The text was composed to record and supply the regional affiliations, essential surnames, and tribal designations that had been omitted from Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti’s genealogical dictionary Lubb al-Lubab fi Tahrir al-Ansab. His treatise was printed in seventy pages in Egypt at Matba'at al-Ma'ahid in 1345 AH. While biographical registers record his death in 1346 AH, some sources note him as living after 1343 AH.
