Mukhtasar al-Adhkar wal-Adab (The Abridgment of Remembrances and Etiquette) is a concise compilation of authentic Prophetic hadiths on daily supplications and Islamic conduct, authored by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim, Imam and Khatib of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina .
Composition and Purpose
The book is an abridgment of the author's larger work entitled al-Adhkar wal-Adab . In compiling the original collection, al-Qasim restricted his selection to narrations deemed authentic (sahih), citing the statement of Ibn Sirin that the early generations learned righteous guidance (al-hady) just as they learned knowledge . He subsequently summarized the material into this work to meet the needs of readers seeking an accessible, focused text for memorization and practice . The book was incorporated into the preparatory level (al-mustawa al-tamhidi) of the Mutun Talib al-’Ilm curriculum established for students at the Prophet's Mosque and affiliated distance-learning programs .
Structure and Content
The text is organized into two primary sections containing numbered thematic units, accompanied by concise footnote glosses of rare vocabulary and standard hadith source attributions :
- Section of Remembrances (Qism al-Adhkar): Covers essential formulas of remembrance and supplication for everyday activities and acts of worship . These include the virtue of gatherings of remembrance, invocations for entering and leaving the lavatory, post-ablution statements, responding to the call to prayer, entering and exiting mosques, supplications during prayer (the opening formula, bowing, prostration, the tashahhud, and supplications before and after the salam), prayers during illness or calamity, travel prayers, entering the home, evening and sleep invocations, morning and evening remembrances (adhkar al-sabah wal-masa'), formulas of praise (tasbih, tahmid, tahlil, and hawqala), seeking forgiveness (istighfar), rain invocations, responding to sneezing, anger management, and the expiation for gatherings .
- Section of Etiquette (Qism al-Adab): Focuses on core Islamic morals, interpersonal conduct, and specific behavioral guidelines . Topics include God-consciousness (muraqaba), filial piety (birr al-walidayn), dining and drinking etiquette, greeting with peace (salam), manners of gatherings and speech, truthfulness, and prohibitions against arrogance, mockery, backbiting (ghiba), tale-bearing (namima), and dishonesty . It also addresses virtues such as humility, cheerfulness, modesty (haya'), and regulations regarding dress and gender interactions, concluding with the aspiration to meet God .
