Mudhakkira ala al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya (Notes on al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya) is a concise theological study note composed by the Saudi Hanbali scholar Ibn Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) as an educational commentary on the creedal treatise al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya by Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728 AH / 1328 CE) .
Background and Purpose
The treatise is counted among Ibn Uthaymin's early writings . He composed it as an instructional aid covering the essential points of the tawhid (theology) syllabus designated for second-year secondary students at the Saudi scientific institutes (al-ma‘ahid al-‘ilmiyya) .
Structure and Method
In this work, Ibn Uthaymin adopted a method of summarization and simplification (al-talkhis wa-l-taqrib), retaining the core substance of Ibn Taymiyya's text while structuring the subject matter through clear pedagogical classifications and concise definitions of theological terms .
The work opens with a brief biographical overview of Ibn Taymiyya, an account of the historical occasion behind the writing of al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya—namely, a request made by a judge from Wasit—and a definition of Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a, before proceeding to elucidate key vocabulary and the core doctrinal statements of the original treatise .
Publication History
The work has circulated under slightly varying titles in several editions:
- It was published as a concise 55-page booklet under the title al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya in 1406 AH by Maktabat al-Huda in al-Thuqba in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia .
- It was published under the title Ta‘liqat ‘ala al-‘Aqida al-Wasitiyya by Dar al-Watan in Riyadh in 1412 AH .
- It was incorporated into the fourth volume of Ibn Uthaymin's compiled works, Majmu‘ Fatawa wa-Rasa’il al-Uthaymin, under the heading Ta‘liqat ‘ala al-‘Aqida al-Wasitiyya, following a cross-checking against the author conducted in Riyadh on 5 Jumada al-Akhira 1412 AH by Fahd ibn Nasir al-Sulayman .
This short educational memorandum is distinct from Ibn Uthaymin's extensive, two-volume commentary on the same creed—derived from audio recordings of his mosque lectures and published as Sharh al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya (and initially as al-Muhadarat al-Saniyya fi Sharh al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya) .
