Min Asbab Adhab al-Qabr (Among the Causes of the Punishment of the Grave) is a series of religious lectures delivered by the Saudi preacher and scholar Saeed bin Misfer (b. 1361 AH / 1942 CE), examining the factors that bring about punishment in the grave during the intermediate state (barzakh) and the means of deliverance from it .
Subject and Structure
The work is organized across a multi-part series of lessons in which the author classifies the causes of punishment in the grave into two principal categories: general (mujmal) and detailed (mufassal) .
- General Causes: These comprise people's ignorance of God, violating His commands, and committing what He has forbidden .
- Detailed Causes: These encompass specific major sins established in Prophetic traditions as incurring punishment in the grave . The author dedicates specific lessons to addressing each transgression:
- Calumny and talebearing (namimah) .
- Neglect of proper purification and avoidance of urine contamination .
- Misappropriation of public wealth and spoils (ghalul) .
- Lying (kidhb) .
- Sexual immorality, including adultery (zina), sodomy, and lesbianism, where he outlines ten factors that lead to committing adultery .
- Usury (riba), sleeping past obligatory prayers, and abandoning the Quran .
In addition to expounding upon the actions that warrant torment, the series highlights the means of salvation from punishment in the grave, stressing the safeguarding of the tongue, eyes, and chastity, as well as occupying one's time in acts of obedience and devotion to God .
