Mashyakhat Abi Bakr ibn Abd al-Da'im is a collection of hadith transmissions and teachers (mashyakha) compiled (takhrij) by the Syrian hadith scholar and historian Alam al-Din al-Barzali (665–739 AH / 1266–1339 CE) for the long-lived traditionist Abu Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Da'im al-Maqdisi .
Background and Subject
The subject of the compilation is Abu Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Da'im ibn Ni'ma al-Maqdisi al-Salihi al-Hajjar (c. 626–718 AH / c. 1228–1318 CE), a Hanbali transmitter of Damascus and Baalbek who possessed exceptionally elevated chains of narration (uluww al-isnad) . Born around the beginning of 626 AH, he died in Ramadan 718 AH (with another account specifying the night of Friday, 29 Ramadan 719 AH) at the age of ninety-three, matching the lifespan of his father, the prominent hadith master Ahmad ibn Abd al-Da'im .
During his lifetime, Abu Bakr transmitted numerous texts, including repeated readings of Sahih al-Bukhari, and was noted for being particularly attentive during reading sessions, refusing to permit narrations to be read past him unless he heard and understood them clearly .
Scope and Transmission
The mashyakha was prepared by al-Barzali as a substantial single volume (juz' kabir) documenting hadith reports that Abu Bakr had received through direct audition (sama') from approximately twenty teachers .
The work circulated among late Mamluk traditionists. The hadith master Salah al-Din al-Ala'i documented reading the mashyakha back to Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Da'im and hearing it from him again in subsequent sessions . The text was also transmitted through Abu Ishaq al-Tanukhi directly from Abu Bakr, a chain recorded by later bibliographers and scholars, including Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti and Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani .
Modern Publication
The work has been edited by Ibrahim Salih and published in Damascus by Dar al-Basha'ir in 1417 AH / 1997 CE under the title Mashyakhat Abi Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Da'im al-Maqdisi .
