Marwiyyat Ghazwat al-Hudaybiyya Jam‘ wa-Takhrij wa-Dirasa (Narrations of the Expedition of al-Hudaybiyya: Compilation, Takhrij, and Study) is a specialized hadith and biographical monograph by the contemporary Saudi scholar Hafiz ibn Muhammad al-Hakami (Hafiz ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Hakami) . The book compiles, critically authenticates, and analyzes the hadiths and historical reports concerning the Expedition and Treaty of al-Hudaybiyya (6 AH), examining both the historical sequence of events and their legal and theological implications .

Scope and Methodology

The work collects narrations from primary Islamic sources without restricting itself to specific texts, drawing from hadith collections, musnads, works of maghazi (military expeditions), general histories, shama'il (prophetic characteristics), dala'il al-nubuwwa (proofs of prophethood), and biographical registers of the Companions .

The author applied classical hadith critical methodology to the gathered material:

  • Assigning a distinct number to each narration and documenting its paths of transmission (turuq) individually without repetition .
  • Providing biographical profiles and evaluation of narrators not found in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, relying primarily on Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Taqrib al-Tahdhib and recording their death years .
  • Evaluating the authenticity of chains that had not been graded by early critics or preserved in the two Sahih collections by examining continuity (ittisal), narrator reliability, and absence of defects (‘ilal) .

Structure and Contents

The monograph is structured into an introduction, four main parts (abwab), and a conclusion :

  • Part One (al-Bab al-Awwal): Examines the nomenclature of the event, analyzing variant titles used by historians—such as Amr al-Hudaybiyya, Qissat al-Hudaybiyya, ‘Umrat al-Hudaybiyya, and Sulh al-Hudaybiyya—and substantiating the preference for designating it as Ghazwat al-Hudaybiyya in accordance with hadith and biographical convention . It includes geographical investigations of the site, details regarding the scout dispatched by the Prophet ﷺ from Khuza'a, the incident of Ghayqa, and the circumstances surrounding the first performance of the fear prayer (salat al-khawf) .
  • Part Two (al-Bab al-Thani): Focuses on the diplomatic exchanges and events at al-Hudaybiyya, examining reports concerning the role of Budayl ibn Warqa', the conversion date of ‘Urwa ibn Mas‘ud al-Thaqafi, the first companion to pledge in the Pledge of the Tree (Bay‘at al-Ridwan), the mutual causes of the peace pact, the legal fulfillment of the treaty regarding emigrant women, and establishing that Zayd ibn Haritha—rather than Abu Basir—seized the caravan of Abu al-‘As .
  • Part Three (al-Bab al-Thalith): Covers the concluding events and outcomes, demonstrating that the prohibition of domestic donkeys occurred at Khaybar rather than al-Hudaybiyya, the details of the sacrificial animals (hady), instances where the companions slept past the dawn prayer, and the miracles of water multiplication during the expedition, alongside its worldly and spiritual ramifications .
  • Part Four (al-Bab al-Rabi‘): Explores the jurisprudence of the narrations (fiqh al-marwiyyat), deducing legal rulings related to warfare (jihad), treaties, creedal matters, and moral lessons derived from the expedition .

Publication

The work was published in Medina by the Scientific Council of the Islamic University of Madinah in 1406 AH (1986 CE) . A later edition was published by Dar Ibn al-Qayyim in Dammam in 1411 AH (1990 CE) .
