Hafiz bin Muhammad Hakami (Dr. Hafiz bin Muhammad bin Abd Allah al-Hakami) is a contemporary Saudi scholar and researcher specializing in hadith studies and prophetic biography (al-Sirah al-Nabawiyya) .

Scholarly Contributions and Research

Hakami is known for his critical hadith analysis and monographs examining early Islamic historical events and theological concepts. In his specialized monograph Marwiyyat Ghazwat al-Hudaybiyya: Jamʿ wa-Takhrij wa-Dirasa (Narrations of the Expedition of al-Hudaybiyya: Compilation, Attribution, and Study), he conducted an exhaustive critical evaluation and legal analysis of the reports surrounding the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyya . He structured the study into four parts, devoting the first three to compiling and critically authenticating the historical transmissions and the fourth to extracting their legal and theological implications (fiqh al-marwiyyat) .

Among his specific findings in the study of al-Hudaybiyya, Hakami argued for adopting the title Ghazwat al-Hudaybiyya (The Expedition of al-Hudaybiyya) over alternatives such as Amr al-Hudaybiyya, Qissat al-Hudaybiyya, ʿUmrat al-Hudaybiyya, or Sulh al-Hudaybiyya based on textual and contextual evidence . He determined the identity of the Khuzaʿi scout dispatched by the Prophet ﷺ to Mecca, integrated the incident of Ghayqa into the events of the expedition, and concluded that the fear prayer (salat al-khawf) mentioned in the narration of Abu ʿAyyash al-Zuraqi was the first of its kind and occurred during al-Hudaybiyya . He also concluded that Budayl ibn Warqa was not an emissary representing either faction, analyzed the motivations underpinning the peace treaty, and examined the chronology of ʿUrwa ibn Masʿud al-Thaqafi's conversion to Islam .

In hadith and doctrinal studies, Hakami authored al-Ahadith al-Warida fi al-Ta'ifa al-Mansura: Dirasa Hadithiyya Fiqhiyya (Narrations Concerning the Victorious Group: A Hadith and Juristic Study) . In this study, he compiled twenty-two narrations regarding the "Victorious Group" (al-Ta'ifa al-Mansura), demonstrating that the vast majority were authentic (sahih) or good (hasan), with only two being weak (daʿif) . He concluded that their leadership is fundamentally anchored in religious scholars, whose adherence to prophetic tradition fosters moderation and guards against extremism, and that the Victorious Group is not restricted to a specific era or geographic location .
