Manhaj Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari fi Musannafihi al-Nihaya fi Gharib al-Hadith wa al-Athar (The Methodology of Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari in His Work al-Nihaya fi Gharib al-Hadith wa al-Athar) is a specialized scholarly treatise by the Syrian scholar Dr. Ahmad Muhammad al-Kharrat examining the lexicographical method and structure of Majd al-Din Ibn al-Athir's (d. 606 AH / 1210 CE) dictionary of rare and difficult hadith terms, al-Nihaya fi Gharib al-Hadith wa al-Athar .

Occasion and Publication

The study was originally composed as a research paper submitted to the symposium titled Care of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the Sunnah and the Prophetic Biography, organized by the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran in Medina on 15 Rabi' al-Awwal 1425 AH (May 2004 CE) . In addition to being circulated online, the material of the paper forms part of the critical study and introduction (vol. 1, pp. 26–79) to al-Kharrat's edition of al-Nihaya, which was published jointly by al-Maktaba al-Makkiyya in Mecca, Mu'assasat al-Rayyan in Beirut, and the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in Qatar in 1434 AH .

Structure and Contents

The treatise is arranged into a general introduction, five core thematic sections (mabahith), and a concluding section :

  • General Introduction: Explores the linguistic semantics of the term gharib (obscure or rare vocabulary) and analyzes the historical and linguistic factors that led to the emergence of unfamiliar words in Hadith and Athar narrations .
  • First Section: Surveys the history of composition in the field of Gharib al-Hadith, charting its origins from the late 2nd century AH, its gradual development across successive generations, and the diverse methodological approaches adopted by early scholars .
  • Second Section: Provides a concise biographical overview of the author of the primary text, Majd al-Din Ibn al-Athir .
  • Third Section: Dedicated to Ibn al-Athir's methodology in al-Nihaya. It analyzes Ibn al-Athir's introductory principles, his classification of hadith vocabulary into individual words and compound structures, and his lexicographical design, such as distributing narrations containing multiple obscure words across separate alphabetical entries rather than keeping them together under a single entry .
  • Fourth Section: Discusses the scholarly significance of al-Nihaya, highlighting how Ibn al-Athir synthesized earlier standard compendia—primarily al-Gharibayn by Abu 'Ubayd al-Harawi and al-Majmu' al-Mughith by Abu Musa al-Madini—while integrating supplementary hadith collections, and how the work preserved substantial citations from lost early sources, such as the works of Ibrahim al-Harbi, Shamir ibn Hamdawayh, Niftawayh, and al-Asma'i .
  • Fifth Section: Examines specific critical remarks and methodological points noted against Ibn al-Athir's execution in the text .
  • Conclusion: Summarizes the main findings and offers academic recommendations, followed by a bibliography of cited sources .
