Man Wafaqat Kunyatuhu Kunyat Zawjihi (Those Whose Agnomen Matched the Agnomen of Their Wife) is a specialized biographical treatise in the sciences of hadith by the traditionist and jurist Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zakariyya ibn Huyawayh (273–366 AH / 886–976 CE) . The short work, also titled Man Wafaqat Kunyatuhu Kunyat Zawjihi min al-Sahabah, is dedicated to identifying married pairs among the Prophet's Companions whose shared agnomens (kunya) were identical .

Scope and Structure

The treatise occupies roughly nineteen folios in manuscript form . Ibn Huyawayh organized the work by entry, first mentioning the male Companion's agnomen, determining his proper personal name, and transmitting a hadith through him with a full chain of narration (isnad) . He then introduces the wife's matching agnomen, provides her personal name, and narrates a hadith through her transmission, though in some instances he restricts himself to recording her name without citing a separate narration .

The couples documented in Ibn Huyawayh's text include:

  • Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi (Malik ibn Rabi'ah) and Umm Usayd al-Ansariyyah
  • Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Khalid ibn Zayd) and Umm Ayyub bint Qays ibn 'Amr
  • Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umm Bakr (his pre-Islamic wife whose conversion to Islam was unverified)
  • Abu al-Dahdah and Umm al-Dahdah
  • Abu al-Darda' and his Companion wife Umm al-Darda' al-Kubra (Khayrah bint Abi Hadrad)
  • Abu Dharr al-Ghifari and Umm Dharr
  • Abu Rafi' (Aslam) and Umm Rafi' (Salma), both freedpersons of the Prophet ﷺ
  • Abu Salamah ('Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Asad) and Umm Salamah (Hind bint Abi Umayyah)
  • Abu Sayf al-Qayn (the foster father of the Prophet's infant son Ibrahim) and Umm Sayf
  • Abu Tulayq and Umm Tulayq
  • Abu al-Fadl (al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib) and Umm al-Fadl (Lubabah bint al-Harith)
  • Abu Ma'qil al-Asadi (Haytham ibn Abi Ma'qil) and Umm Ma'qil al-Asadiyyah

Reception and Editions

The subject established by Ibn Huyawayh was later incorporated into classical hadith terminology manuals—such as Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani's Nukhbat al-Fikar and al-Suyuti's Tadrib al-Rawi—as an independent subcategory of onomastics . Subsequent authors composed independent monographs on the topic, notably Ibn 'Asakir and al-Suyuti, the latter of whom abridged Ibn Huyawayh's work . Al-Suyuti noted that Ibn Huyawayh had omitted two pairs of Companions: Abu Ma'bad with Umm Ma'bad, and Abu Ra'lah with Umm Ra'lah .

The text has been published in modern editions, including an edition edited by Muhammad Hasan Al Yasin published in the journal of the Arab Academy of Damascus in 1972 CE, and another edited by Mashhur Hasan published by Dar Ibn al-Qayyim in Dammam in 1401 AH .
