Abu al-Hasan Ibn Hayuya (273–366 AH / 886–977 CE) was a Shafi'i judge and hadith scholar of Nishapuri heritage who settled in Egypt, best known for his monograph Man Wafaqat Kunyatuhu Kunyat Zawjihi min al-Sahabah .
Early life and education
His full name was Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zakariyya ibn Hayuya al-Naysaburi al-Misri, also known by the nisba al-Hayuwi . He was born in 273 AH (886/887 CE) . His family originated from Nishapur, though Abu Sa'd al-Sam'ani notes a report that his birth and upbringing took place in Egypt . He traveled to Egypt as a youth in the company of his paternal uncle, the hadith master Yahya ibn Zakariyya al-A'raj (known as Hayuya), who facilitated his early hadith audition . Beyond Egypt, he heard transmissions in Damascus and other localities .
He studied under several prominent traditionists, most notably Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Nasa'i, from whom he narrated extensively, as well as his uncle Yahya, Abu Bakr al-Bazzar, Bakr ibn Sahl al-Dimyati, and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Manjaniqi . Those who transmitted hadith from him include Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni, Abd al-Ghani ibn Sa'id, Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Taffal, Harun ibn Yahya al-Tahhan, and Ali ibn Muhammad al-Khurasani .
Scholarship and standing
Ibn Hayuya served as a judge (qadi) and adhered to the Shafi'i legal school . Ibn Kathir characterized him as one of the Shafi'i authorities in the law of inheritance (fara'id), whereas Abu Nasr al-Wa'ili reported that he engaged with inheritance law but showed weakness in it .
In biographical evaluations, Ibn Makula evaluated him as trustworthy and noble (thiqa nabil), and Abu Nasr al-Wa'ili deemed him trustworthy and firm (thiqa thabt) . Al-Daraqutni observed that Ibn Hayuya strictly maintained decorum during his teaching circles, refusing to permit anyone to talk while hadith was being read . His specialized hadith tract, Man Wafaqat Kunyatuhu Kunyat Zawjihi min al-Sahabah ("Those Whose Agnomen Matched the Agnomen of Their Wife Among the Companions"), gathered biographical pairings of Companions sharing identical agnomens, citing a transmitted tradition for each entry .
Death
Ibn Hayuya died in Rajab 366 AH (February/March 977 CE) at approximately ninety years of age . According to Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Marzuq, he passed away on the night of Monday and was buried on Monday, 18 Rajab 366 AH; another account places his death on 15 Rajab .
