Majmu Fatawa wa Rasail al-Uthaymin (The Compendium of Legal Rulings and Treatises of al-Uthaymin) is a comprehensive multi-volume collection of legal opinions (fatawa), epistles, and essays by the Saudi Hanbali jurist Ibn Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE), compiled and organized by his student Fahd ibn Nasir al-Sulayman.
Compilation and Sources
The collection was initiated after Fahd ibn Nasir ibn Ibrahim al-Sulayman obtained permission and approval from Ibn Uthaymin to compile his scattered legal verdicts and writings. The compiler began assembling the material on the evening of Wednesday, 22 Safar 1407 AH.
The material was gathered from a variety of oral and written sources, including:
- Legal answers broadcast on the radio program Nur ala al-Darb (Light Along the Path).
- Question-and-answer sessions delivered at the Sacred Mosque in Mecca during the years 1406, 1407, and 1408 AH.
- Audio recordings of lectures on the jurisprudence of worship (Fiqh al-Ibadat) and other public addresses.
- Legal rulings published in newspapers and periodicals, alongside written answers sent directly by Ibn Uthaymin to the compiler.
Ibn Uthaymin personally undertook a detailed review and correction of the assembled texts, beginning his revision on Friday, 29 Shawwal 1407 AH, and continuing to inspect the manuscripts even while traveling. The title Majmu Fatawa wa Rasail Fadilat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin was proposed by al-Sulayman and formally approved by the author.
Structure and Editions
The compendium organizes Ibn Uthaymin's doctrinal treatises, juristic rulings, and thematic epistles across traditional Islamic legal and theological subjects. Certain questions appear multiple times within the collection; the compiler noted that these repetitions were retained because the author's answers varied in length—ranging from concise to detailed—and provided different textual proofs for the same legal issues.
The collection was published in 26 volumes by Dar al-Watan and Dar al-Thurayya.
