Majmu Fatawa wa Maqalat Mutanawwia (Collected Legal Rulings and Miscellaneous Articles) is the primary multi-volume compilation of legal verdicts (fatwas), treatises, articles, and lectures by the Saudi scholar and Grand Mufti Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah ibn Baz (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE), compiled and supervised by Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-Shuway'ir .
Background and Compilation
The compilation was undertaken with the approval of Ibn Baz during his lifetime to fulfill widespread requests for his dispersed legal answers and writings . An official collection was also intended to provide an authenticated reference and dispel doubts caused by unauthorized materials circulating both inside and outside Saudi Arabia . Ibn Baz noted in his preface that he gathered his fatwas and articles issued across various periods so that they might be accessible in a unified collection .
Organization and Scope
The collection spans thirty volumes and includes detailed subject indexes appended in a separate volume . The material is arranged according to the standard thematic structure of Islamic jurisprudence (tartib al-fuqaha'), opening with Islamic creed (aqidah) because of its foundational importance, followed by rulings on acts of worship and other legal chapters .
Because certain articles and fatwas had been presented to Ibn Baz during his lifetime after earlier volumes had already been published, he directed that these additions be placed at the end of the collection as appendices (mulhaqat) . Consequently, Volume 28 contains supplementary texts on creed (Mulhaqat al-Aqidah), followed by Volumes 29 and 30 containing supplements on ritual purity (taharah) and prayer (salah) .
Publication and Derivatives
The work has been issued in multiple printings, primarily published under the auspices of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta in Riyadh, as well as by publishers such as Dar al-Qasim . Published editions include a first edition in 1408 AH, a second edition in 1416 AH (and reprinted in 1421 AH), a third edition in 1421 AH (reprinted in 1423 AH), and a fourth edition in 1423 AH (and 1427 AH) .
Abridgments and thematic selections have been drawn from the collection, including al-Durar al-Thariyyah min al-Fatawa al-Baziyyah, an abridged selection of fatwas compiled by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Humayzi directly from the thirty volumes .
