Majalis Ramadan (Sessions of Ramadan, also titled Majalis Shahr Ramadan) is a treatise by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE) that expounds the legal rulings, spiritual exhortations, and etiquettes associated with the month of Ramadan .
Purpose and Structure
The book is structured into a sequence of daily or nightly gatherings (majalis) designed to cover the religious obligations and devotional practices of Ramadan . Its contents focus extensively on the jurisprudential rulings and etiquettes of fasting (siyam), voluntary night prayers (qiyam), and obligatory almsgiving (zakat), alongside lessons tailored to the spiritual themes of the month .
The initial sessions address the virtues of the month of Ramadan and the spiritual merits of fasting . Subsequent sessions treat practical legal issues, such as factors that invalidate or do not invalidate the fast, descriptions of the Prophet's night prayer, the recitation of the Quran, and the rules governing zakat al-fitr at the conclusion of the month .
Sources and Composition
In his introduction, al-Uthaymin notes that he drew many of the book's sermons and exhortations from the work Qurrat al-Uyun al-Mubsirah bi-Talkhis Kitab al-Tabsirah, modifying and adapting the selected material as necessary . He expanded the discussion of legal rulings (ahkam) and religious manners (adab) to address the practical needs of the public .
After the text had been printed multiple times, the author undertook a revision in which he added concise explanatory notes, documented the citations of its hadiths (takhrij), included supplementary points, and removed minor superfluous passages without altering the core scope of the work .
