Kitab al-Arbaeen fi Fadl al-Dua wal-Daain – Juz 5 (The Book of Forty Hadiths on the Virtue of Supplication and Those Who Supplicate – Part 5) is the fifth and final part of a specialized collection of prophetic traditions on supplication (dua), compiled with chains of narration by the Maliki jurist and hadith scholar Ali ibn al-Mufaddal al-Maqdisi (d. 611 AH / 1214 CE) .

Overview and Content

The parent work belongs to the thematic forty-hadith genre (al-arba'iniyyat), dedicated specifically to the merits of supplication, its etiquette, and reported invocations . The fifth part (al-juz' al-khamis) contains the concluding segment of these traditions, recorded with full isnads extending back through classical authorities . The narrated texts cover various aspects of supplication and daily devotions, including invocations upon embarking on a journey and prayers said when bidding farewell to departing companions .

The traditions preserved in this work have served as source material for later hadith commentators and researchers tracking supplementary narrations (zawa'id), such as Abd al-Salam Muhammad Allush's compilation Zawa'id al-Ajza' al-Manthura ala al-Kutub al-Sittah al-Mashhura .

Manuscripts and Publication

An early manuscript witness of the fifth part is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under majmu' 94 (no. 3830, fols. 238–255), dated to 590 AH during the author's lifetime . Additional manuscripts and copies are documented across several collections, including Princeton University Library, the Central Library in Mecca, the National Library of Egypt (Dar al-Kutub), and al-Azhar .

The fifth part was edited by Badr ibn Abd Allah al-Badr and published in Beirut by Dar Ibn Hazm (1414 AH / 1993 CE) alongside Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani's al-Arba'un ala Madhhab al-Muhaqqiqin min al-Sufiyya; the editor noted that he only had access to this fifth part because the other parts were not available to him . A complete edition of the full work was later published by King Saud University in Riyadh (1434 AH / 2013 CE), edited by Hasan Muhammad Abahji .
