Juz' fihi Turuq Hadith 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla 'an Ka'b ibn 'Ujra fi al-Salat 'ala al-Nabi (A Treatise on the Transmission Paths of the Hadith of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla from Ka'b ibn 'Ujra Regarding Invoking Blessings upon the Prophet) is a specialized hadith monograph compiled by the hadith scholar Ali ibn al-Mufaddal al-Maqdisi (d. 611 AH / 1214 CE) . The work gathers and analyzes the various transmission chains (turuq) of the prophetic report transmitted by Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla from the Companion Ka'b ibn 'Ujra concerning the specific phrasing and manner of invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ .

Purpose and Methodology

The treatise functions similarly to a mustakhraj on the two canonical collections of Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj . Rather than merely listing chains of transmission, al-Maqdisi systematically evaluates the authenticity of the narrations, appending critical rulings to each report using formulas of authentication such as declaring a narration to be authentic, established, and agreed upon (sahih thabit muttafaq 'alayh) .

Al-Maqdisi does not grade any narration in the collection as weak (da'if), because the vast majority of the texts he includes are drawn directly from Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, or both . The few narrations outside the two Sahih works are cited strictly to serve as supporting and corroborating evidence (mutaba'at and shawahid) .

In his sourcing, al-Maqdisi documents the distinct paths preserved in the canonical works, distinguishing which narrations were transmitted exclusively by al-Bukhari or by Muslim, as well as those agreed upon by both . He details the primary chains branching from Ibn Abi Layla, including the transmissions of al-Hakam ibn 'Utayba and 'Abd Allah ibn 'Isa .

Transmission

Al-Maqdisi relates the narrations in the text through his own teachers, prominently including the hadith master Abu al-Tahir al-Silafi . The work was transmitted directly from al-Maqdisi in Cairo by his student Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Mu'ti ibn 'Abd al-Karim al-Ansari al-Khazraji, and its transmission records document audition sessions by scholars such as Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Zahiri and his son 'Uthman .
