Ishruna Hadithan min Sahih al-Bukhari: Dirasat Asanidiha wa Sharh Mutuniha (Twenty Hadiths from Sahih al-Bukhari: A Study of Their Chains and Explanation of Their Texts) is a specialized hadith work by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Muhsin al-Abbad (b. 1353 AH / 1934 CE), dedicated to the analytical study and commentary of twenty selected prophetic traditions from Sahih al-Bukhari .
Background and Purpose
Al-Abbad completed the work in Jumada al-Ula 1390 AH (July 1970 CE) . The text was prepared as an academic curriculum for first-year students at the College of Sharia at the Islamic University of Madinah . The author selected twenty hadiths from the collection of Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari, choosing reports whose chains of transmission (asanid) and texts (mutun) offered substantial didactic benefits in both hadith criticism and legal deduction .
Structure and Content
The book opens with a brief introductory biography of al-Bukhari and a concise overview of his al-Jami' al-Sahih . Each of the twenty hadiths is systematically examined across four distinct sections (mabahith):
- Hadith Extraction (Takhrij al-Hadith): Identifies the locations where al-Bukhari recorded the narration in his work, citing the associated chains in most instances, as well as cross-referencing other canonical compilers who recorded the hadith along with their respective source works .
- Biographies of Narrators (al-Ta'rif bi-Rijal al-Isnad): Provides concise biographical notices for every transmitter in the chain, outlining their lineage, geographical origin, notable teachers and students, critical assessments of reliability (ta'dil and tawthiq), the collections that documented their narrations, and their years of death . For the Companion narrating from the Prophet ﷺ, the author records their total tally of transmissions in the Sahihayn and the four Sunan compilations, specifying agreements between al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj as well as their individual narrations following the format of al-Khazraji in Khulasat Tadhhib al-Kamal .
- Subtleties and Practical Terminological Points (Lata'if al-Isnad): Details subtle features of the chain and serves as an applied study of hadith nomenclature (mustalah al-hadith), highlighting structural peculiarities, narrator pairings, and transmission formulas .
- Textual Explanation and Legal Deductions (Sharh al-Hadith): Explains the phrasing and concepts of the matn, concluding with an analysis of the derived rulings and theological or practical points (fiqh al-hadith wa-ma yustanbatu minhu) .
Sources
In compiling the biographical evaluations, terminology, and textual commentary, al-Abbad relied primarily on the works of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, particularly Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, Taqrib al-Tahdhib, and Fath al-Bari alongside its introduction (Hady al-Sari) .
Publication History
The work was first printed in 1390 AH (1970 CE) by al-Matba'a al-Salafiyya in Cairo . It was later published in a single volume by the Islamic University of Madinah in 1409 AH (1988/1989 CE) . Al-Abbad authored a companion curriculum work following the same methodological structure, titled Ishruna Hadithan min Sahih Muslim: Dirasat Asanidiha wa Sharh Mutuniha, tailored for second-year students .
