I'rab al-Qur'an wa Bayanuhu (Arabic: إعراب القرآن وبيانه, lit. 'The Grammatical Analysis of the Qur'an and Its Rhetorical Exposition') is a multi-volume modern reference on the grammatical parsing (i'rab) and rhetorical elucidation (bayan) of the Qur'an by the Syrian man of letters and linguist Muhyi al-Din Darwish (1326–1403 AH / 1908–1982 CE) .
Composition and Scope
Muhyi al-Din Darwish signed the introduction to the work in Homs in Jumada al-Ula 1400 AH / April 1980 CE . The book was designed as a comprehensive reference covering the entirety of the Qur'anic text, structured to align with the divisions of the Qur'an so that readers would not need recourse to separate manuals of grammatical analysis and rhetoric .
Method and Content
The author organized his commentary by providing lexical explanations of vocabulary (al-lugha) followed by detailed verse-by-verse grammatical parsing (al-i'rab) and observations on rhetorical subtleties (al-bayan) . In compiling its rhetorical insights, Darwish drew upon the classical authorities of eloquence and Arabic linguistics, framing the material in an accessible, modern educational style that avoids the complexities and dense terminology of older supercommentaries .
Reception and Editions
The work has been recognized among contemporary scholars as one of the foremost modern manuals of Qur'anic grammatical analysis, noted for its thoroughness, precision, and clarity . Scholars such as Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr have regarded it as the most detailed and preferable modern work in the genre, favoring it over other contemporary compilations such as al-Jadwal fi I'rab al-Qur'an by Mahmud Safi .
The work has been published in ten volumes, notably through joint editions by Dar al-Irshad in Homs, Dar al-Yamamah in Damascus and Beirut, and Dar Ibn Kathir in Damascus and Beirut .
