Early Life and Education
Muhyi al-Din ibn Ahmad Mustafa Darwish was born in Homs, Syria, in 1326 AH (1908 CE). He received his foundational education in the local schools of Homs, which at the time functioned as traditional Quranic schools (kuttabs) where students learned the Quran and its disciplines. Demonstrating aptitude from an early age, he completed his studies of the Quran by the age of ten, enabling him to gain admission to the Higher Teachers Training College (Dar al-Mu'allimin al-'Ulya) in Damascus.
Career and Literary Activity
In 1932, the Ministry of Education selected Darwish to serve as an instructor of Arabic literature in the preparatory schools of Homs. Alongside teaching, he pursued journalistic and literary endeavors, editing several periodicals and founding the cultural magazine al-Khamail al-Adabiyyah in 1963, which served as a venue for Syrian and Arab writers and poets. He contributed poetry and essays to prominent publications such as the Cairo-based journal al-Risalah, and he also engaged in literary editing, co-editing the classical poetic collection Diwan Dik al-Jinn. In addition to these activities, he served as a member of the Supreme Council for the Care of Arts, Literature, and Social Sciences.
Scholarly Standing and Death
Darwish achieved widespread recognition through his magnum opus, I'rab al-Qur'an wa-Bayanuhu, which he completed in Homs in Jumada al-Ula 1400 AH (April 1980 CE), organizing the analysis to correspond with the divisions of the Quranic text so as to integrate grammatical parsing with rhetorical commentary. Later scholars and publishers noted the work alongside major modern commentaries for its accessible phrasing, comprehensive coverage, and convenience for contemporary students of Arabic and Quranic studies.
