Iqamat al-Barahin ala Hukm man Istaghatha b-Ghayr Allah aw Saddaq al-Kahanah wa al-Arrafin (Establishing the Proofs Regarding the Ruling on One Who Seeks Deliverance from Other than God or Believes Soothsayers and Diviners) is a theological treatise by the Saudi Arabian scholar Ibn Baz (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) addressing the Islamic rulings on supplication, seeking aid from created beings, and occult practices .
Purpose and Structure
The book compiles three treatises aimed at clarifying core matters of creed (tawhid) and warning against theological innovations and superstitions :
- The Ruling on Seeking Deliverance from the Prophet (Fi Hukm al-Istighatha bi-al-Nabi): Ibn Baz composed this section in response to verses published in the Kuwaiti magazine al-Mujtama' (Issue 15, dated 19 Rabi' al-Thani 1395 AH) by a writer named "Amina" under the title "On the Anniversary of the Noble Prophetic Birthday" (Fi Dhikra al-Mawlid al-Nabawi al-Sharif), which called upon the Prophet Muhammad to grant victory and rescue the Muslim community from disunity . Ibn Baz argues that victory, harm, and benefit belong solely to God, citing Quranic verses such as وَمَا النَّصْرُ إِلَّا مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ ("And victory is not but from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise") . He emphasizes that supplication (du'a) is worship due exclusively to God, while distinguishing this from permissible everyday requests made to living, present individuals for tangible matters within their power .
- The Ruling on Seeking Deliverance from the Jinn and Devils and Making Vows to Them (Fi Hukm al-Istighatha bi-al-Jinn wa-al-Shayatin wa-al-Nadhr Lahum): This section details the prohibition of invoking unseen beings and classifies seeking aid from jinn as a severe form of polytheism .
- The Ruling on Worshiping through Innovated and Polytheistic Litanies (Fi Hukm al-Ta'abbud bi-al-Awrad al-Bid'iyyah wa-al-Shirkiyyah): This section warns against non-legislated devotional phrases and invocations .
Publication History
The work was printed in 1393 AH by Matabi' Dar al-Thaqafah – al-Zahir and published by the Muslim World League in Mecca, after which it underwent several reprints . It was also published in 1404 AH by the General Presidency of the Administrations of Scientific Research, Ifta, Da'wah and Guidance in Saudi Arabia, and it was later incorporated into Ibn Baz's multi-volume compilation Majmu' Fatawa wa-Maqalat Mutanawwi'ah (Compendium of Various Fatwas and Articles) .
