Ikhtisar Sahih al-Bukhari wa Bayan Gharibih (Arabic: اختصار صحيح البخاري وبيان غريبه, lit. 'Abridgment of Sahih al-Bukhari and Clarification of Its Rare Vocabulary') is a hadith work by the Andalusian Maliki jurist and traditionist Abu al-Abbas al-Qurtubi (578–656 AH / 1182–1258 CE) . The book abridges the canonical hadith compilation Sahih al-Bukhari of al-Bukhari and elucidates its difficult and uncommon expressions (gharib) .

Method and Contents

The work was composed as a concise edition of Sahih al-Bukhari, condensing its narratives while incorporating glosses on obscure lexical items and phrasing found throughout the Prophetic reports . In treating repeated hadiths across different chapters, al-Qurtubi frequently cross-references earlier occurrences rather than reproducing the full text anew . Bibliographical sources record the incipit of the text as: «الحمد لله الذي خص أهل السنة بالتوفيق» ("Praise be to God who singled out the people of the Sunnah with success") .

Manuscripts and Publication

A manuscript copy of the work is preserved in the library of the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, opening at the chapter on the conversion of Umar ibn al-Khattab to Islam .

The work was critically edited by Rifat Fawzi Abd al-Muttalib and published in five volumes by Dar al-Nawadir in Damascus (1435 AH / 2014 CE) . In this edition, the editor linked the abridgment to standard printed editions of Sahih al-Bukhari, identified hadith locations and transmission routes, provided additional lexical and grammatical explanations where al-Qurtubi omitted them, vocalized the text, added indexes for repeated hadiths, and recorded manuscript folio numbers .
