Abu al-Abbas al-Qurtubi (578–656 AH / 1182–1258 CE) was an Andalusian Maliki jurist, legal theorist, and hadith scholar who settled in Alexandria, best known for his hadith commentary al-Mufhim lima ashkal min Talkhis Kitab Muslim .

Background and education

His full name was Diya al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Umar ibn Ibrahim ibn Umar al-Ansari al-Andalusi al-Qurtubi . In his homeland he was commonly known as Ibn al-Muzayyin, an appellation derived from his father's occupation . He was born in Cordoba in 578 AH (1182 CE), though a note recorded in the handwriting of Abu Hayyan al-Gharnati placed his birth after 580 AH .

He was raised in al-Andalus and traveled in his youth with his father, hearing hadith in Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem . Across the western Islamic lands, he studied in Cordoba under Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Yahsubi (also recorded as Ibn Hafs) , in Fes under Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Isa ibn al-Muljum al-Azdi , in Tlemcen under Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Tujibi and Qadi Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Sulayman ibn Hawt Allah , and in Ceuta under Abd al-Haqq ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Khazraji, from whom he heard most of the Muwatta in 600 AH . He also studied under Abu Muhammad Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili and narrated from Abu al-Asbagh ibn al-Dabbagh .

Career and students

Al-Qurtubi relocated to Egypt and took up residence in Alexandria, where he served as a teacher, hadith transmitter, and legal notary . Students from across the Islamic world attended his circles; among the most prominent was his student and namesake, the Quran exegete Abu Abd Allah al-Qurtubi, who studied under him in Alexandria and transmitted portions of his works . Other notable students included the hadith master Abd al-Mu'min al-Dimyati, who took transmission licenses from him, Qadi Jamal al-Din al-Maliki, Abu al-Hasan ibn Yahya al-Qurashi, and Ibn al-Abbar via written authorization .

Scholarly standing

Biographers recognized al-Qurtubi for his command of hadith criticism, Maliki jurisprudence, legal theory, and Arabic philology . Ibn Farhun praised him as one of the leading figures of Maliki scholarship, while al-Dhahabi described him as the scholar of Alexandria and an authoritative verifier .

In hadith literature, he composed al-Mufhim lima ashkal min Talkhis Kitab Muslim ("The Clarifier of Obscurities in the Summary of Muslim's Book"), a detailed commentary on his own abridgment of Sahih Muslim that addressed lexical difficulties, grammatical nuances, and juristic deductions across legal schools . He also authored Ikhtisar Sahih al-Bukhari wa-Bayan Gharibih ("Abridgment of Sahih al-Bukhari and Explanation of Its Rare Vocabulary") and the juristic treatise Kashf al-qina' 'an hukm al-wajd wa-al-sama' ("Unveiling the Mask on the Ruling of Ecstasy and Musical Audition") .

Death

List of Works

  • This hadith work is a concise abridgment of the canonical compilation Sahih al-Bukhari. It condenses the original collection's narratives and elucidates rare, obscure, and difficult vocabulary (gharib) found throughout the Prophetic reports, frequently cross-referencing repeated traditions across chapters instead of reproducing their full texts.

  • This comprehensive hadith commentary serves as an elucidation of the author's own abridgment of Sahih Muslim, titled Talkhis Kitab Muslim. Opening with a commentary on Imam Muslim's introduction, the work explains rare vocabulary and grammatical nuances, articulates legal deductions across various schools of law, and clarifies obscure or ostensibly conflicting narrations.
