Husul al-Mamul bi Sharh Thalathat al-Usul (Attaining the Hoped-For Goal through the Explanation of the Three Fundamentals) is a contemporary theological commentary authored by Abd Allah ibn Salih al-Fawzan, explaining the treatise Thalathat al-Usul wa-Adillatuha by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1115–1206 AH) .
Background and Composition
The work developed from teaching sessions that al-Fawzan delivered to students in the mosque . Aiming to facilitate the study of the primary treatise and encourage its memorization and comprehension, he compiled the material into an intermediate-length written commentary (sharh mutawassit) . Al-Fawzan concluded the composition of the book on Friday evening, 19 Dhu al-Hijjah 1417 AH (April 25, 1997 CE), in the city of Buraidah .
Content and Method
The commentary covers the fundamental topics of Islamic monotheism addressed in the base text, including Tawhid al-Rububiyyah (the oneness of divine Lordship), Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (the oneness of divine worship), al-Wala' wa-l-Bara' (loyalty and disavowal), and related theological tenets . In his method of exposition, al-Fawzan:
- Provides textual commentary on the Quranic verses cited throughout the treatise .
- Explains the prophetic hadiths and clarifies their meanings and rulings .
- Systematically clarifies doctrinal points and definitions in accessible terms .
For the matn (base text), al-Fawzan relied upon the version accompanying the gloss of Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim, noting that it conforms to the edition published in Majmu'at Mu'allafat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, which had been cross-referenced against multiple manuscript copies, chief among them the manuscript held at the Saudi Library in Riyadh .
Reception
Husul al-Mamul is regarded among contemporary scholars as one of the prominent printed commentaries on Thalathat al-Usul, frequently cited alongside the commentaries of Ibn Uthaymin and the gloss of Ibn Qasim .
