Hayat al-Tabiin

Hayat al-Tabiin (Hayāt al-Tābiʿīn, "The Life of the Successors") is an abridgment and thematic selection of al-Dhahabi’s biographical compendium Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', compiled by the contemporary Egyptian author Yasir al-Hamdani.

Background and Purpose

Yasir al-Hamdani compiled the work after observing that most previous abridgments of Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' approached it strictly as a technical biographical reference for hadith transmitters (‘ilm al-rijāl), limiting its accessibility to general readers. He aimed instead to present the material as a book of spiritual counsel, heart-softening admonitions (raqāʾiq), and Islamic etiquette (adab). Out of approximately five thousand biographies in al-Dhahabi's encyclopedia, al-Hamdani selected 120 figures. The material was drawn from the fourth volume through to the end of Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', condensed into a single volume, following a separate abridgment he made of the first three volumes on the Companions titled Aṣḥāb Muḥammad.

Structure and Methodology

Unlike al-Dhahabi's chronological arrangement by death dates, al-Hamdani restructured the biographies topically into eight categories (ṭabaqāt) according to scholarly specialization, ordering the figures within each category from most famous to least famous:

  1. Leading hadith scholars (aʾimmat al-muḥaddithīn), covering authors of the Ṣiḥāḥ, Masānīd, and Sunan collections.
  2. Senior hadith scholars (kibār al-muḥaddithīn), covering other major figures of hadith excluding critics.
  3. Hadith critics (al-nuqqād min al-muḥaddithīn).
  4. Eminent jurists (aʿlām al-fuqahāʾ).
  5. Eminent Quranic exegetes (aʿlām al-mufassirīn).
  6. Eminent judges, governors, and grammarians (aʿlām al-quḍāh wa-al-wulāh wa-al-nuḥāh).
  7. Eminent ascetics (aʿlām al-zuhhād).
  8. Prominent figures among the Alids (al-mashāhīr min al-ʿAlawiyyīn).

In each entry, al-Hamdani removed lengthy chains of narration, extensive catalogs of teachers and students, and technical critical notes, focusing instead on selected authentic narratives, memorable statements, and impactful incidents. Every biography follows a uniform template:

  • The preferred birth and death dates according to al-Dhahabi.
  • The individual's most prominent teachers and students.
  • Upbringing, travels in pursuit of knowledge, and scholarly diligence.
  • Scholars' praise of the subject.
  • Reports on early brilliance, memory, and breadth of learning.
  • Piety, humility in worship, and scrupulousness in legal rulings.
  • Hardships, trials, and encounters with persecutors.
  • Methodology in issuing fatwas, tafsir, or authorship, where applicable.
  • Descriptions of teaching circles, public esteem, reported miracles (karāmāt), and dream visions.
