Hadith Abi Sa'id al-Ashaj (also titled Juz' fihi min Hadith Abi Sa'id al-Ashaj) is a specialized hadith tract (juz') containing narrations transmitted by the Kufan hadith scholar Abu Sa'id 'Abd Allah ibn Sa'id al-Ashaj (d. 257 AH / 871 CE) .
Transmission and Authorship
The collection is preserved through the transmission of Abu Muhammad Yazdad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Katib al-Baghdadi (d. 327 AH / 938 CE), who received these narrations directly from Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj in Kufa in the year 248 AH . The subsequent line of transmission recorded in the work proceeds through:
- Abu al-Qasim 'Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn 'Ali al-Saydalani (read to him in Rajab 396 AH) .
- Abu al-Qasim 'Abd Allah ibn al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Khallal (in Dhu al-Qi'da 467 AH) .
- Abu al-Qasim Isma'il ibn Ahmad ibn 'Umar al-Samarqandi (in Jumada al-Akhira 535 AH) .
- Abu al-Thana' Hammad ibn Hibat Allah ibn Hammad al-Harrani .
Scholars have noted that although the manuscript and printed editions bear the title Juz' fihi min Hadith Abi Sa'id al-Ashaj, classical bibliographies did not explicitly record a distinct written work by al-Ashaj under this title; it is possible that the tract was compiled directly by Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj or subsequently compiled by Abu al-Qasim al-Saydalani from his transmissions .
Content and Structure
The tract consists of prophetic traditions and narrations transmitted with their isnads through Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj from several of his principal authorities, most prominently 'Uqba ibn Khalid al-Sakuni, Abu Khalid al-Ahmar, 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr, Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, and 'Utham ibn 'Ali . The reports span various legal, ethical, and doctrinal topics, including:
- Legal rulings on prayer, the prayer sutrah, and funeral supplications .
- Business transactions and commercial prohibitions .
- Eschatological prophecies, such as the Euphrates uncovering a hoard or mountain of gold .
- The virtues of companions, etiquette of visiting the sick, and nocturnal prayers .
Preservation and Publication
A manuscript of the work is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (within collective manuscript no. 18, fols. 211–224) . The text was edited by Abu Nujayd Isma'il ibn Muhammad Sayyid 'Ali al-Jaza'iri and published by Dar al-Mughni in Riyadh .
