Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj (d. 257 AH / 871 CE) was a Kufan hadith master (hafiz) and Quranic exegete renowned as one of the major traditionists of Kufa in his era .

Lineage and Background

His full name was Abdullah ibn Said ibn Husayn al-Kindi al-Kufi, with the kunya Abu Sa'id (and in some records Abu Sa'd), commonly known by the epithet al-Ashajj . He was affiliated with the tribe of Kinda and lived and taught in Kufa .

Scholarly Career and Transmission

Al-Ashajj studied under numerous prominent scholars of the earlier generation. Among his teachers were Abu Khalid al-Ahmar, Hafs ibn Ghiyath, Waki ibn al-Jarrah, Hushaym ibn Bashir, Abdullah ibn Idris, Abu Usama Hammad ibn Usama, Abd al-Salam ibn Harb, Uqba ibn Khalid al-Sakuni, and Muhammad ibn Fudayl .

He became a prominent authority in hadith transmission and composed a work of Quranic exegesis (Tafsir) and a specialized hadith tract (Juz' in hadith) . All six compilers of the canonical Sunni hadith collections—al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah—transmitted narrations from him, with al-Bukhari recording eight hadiths and Muslim recording seventy hadiths from his transmission . Other leading scholars who transmitted from him included Abu Zur'a al-Razi, Abu Hatim al-Razi, Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Abi al-Dunya, and Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili .

Standing and Critical Evaluation

Al-Ashajj received extensive praise from contemporary critics and subsequent biographers for his precision and memory. Abu Hatim al-Razi described him as "trustworthy, truthful, and the leader (imam) of the people of his time" . Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Bilal al-Shatwi remarked: "I have not seen anyone with a stronger memory than him" . Al-Nasa'i evaluated him as truthful (saduq) and stated that there was no harm in his transmission .

Critical appraisals also noted his wide network of shaykhs; Yahya ibn Ma'in commented: "There is no harm in him, but he narrates from weak transmitters" . He was included by Ibn Hibban in his compendium of trustworthy narrators (al-Thiqat), and was affirmed as trustworthy (thiqah) by al-Khalili and Maslama ibn Qasim .

Death

Al-Ashajj died in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal in 257 AH (871 CE), having lived past the age of ninety . Other historical reports place his death in 256 AH (recorded by Ibn Qani') or 255 AH, while Ibn Hibban noted broadly that he died after 240 AH .
