Fusul fi al-Siyam wa al-Tarawih wa al-Zakah (Chapters on Fasting, Tarawih, and Zakah) is a concise legal treatise by the Saudi jurist Ibn Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE), outlining the fundamental rulings, spiritual wisdoms, and obligations surrounding fasting during Ramadan, night prayers, and the payment of Zakah and Zakat al-Fitr.
Purpose and Outline
The author prepared the work as an accessible guide addressed to Muslims on the occasion of the arrival of Ramadan, aiming to provide clear legal and practical guidance grounded in Islamic law. The treatise is structured into eight distinct chapters (fusul):
- The Ruling of Fasting (Fi Hukm al-Siyam): Explaining the obligatory nature of fasting Ramadan as established by the Quran, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.
- Its Wisdoms and Benefits (Fi Hikamihi wa Fawa'idihi): Highlighting the moral, spiritual, behavioral, and physical wisdoms of fasting, such as achieving piety (taqwa), refining character, experiencing empathy for the poor, training in self-restraint, and the digestive health benefits of food reduction.
- The Ruling on the Fasting of the Sick and the Traveler (Fi Hukm Siyam al-Marid wa-l-Musafir): Distinguishing between permanent chronic illness—requiring feeding a poor person per day—and temporary illness, as well as detailing the conditions under which a traveler or sick person is excused, recommended, or prohibited from fasting.
- The Invalidators of Fasting (Fi Mufsidat al-Sawm wa hiya al-Muftirat): Enumerating the acts and substances that break the fast.
- The Tarawih Prayer (Fi al-Tarawih): Addressing the regulations and manners of performing the communal night prayers in Ramadan, including cautions against excessive rushing by prayer leaders.
- Zakah and Its Benefits (Fi al-Zakah wa Fawa'idiha): Covering the obligation and socioeconomic benefits of the obligatory alms.
- The Recipients of Zakah (Fi Ahl al-Zakah): Detailing the categories of individuals eligible to receive Zakah funds according to Islamic law.
- Zakat al-Fitr (Fi Zakat al-Fitr): Defining the prescribed end-of-Ramadan charity, its timing, recipients, and acceptable measures of foodstuffs.
Transmission and Publication
The text has been published as an independent booklet under various slightly differing titles, including Fusul fi Hukm al-Siyam wa al-Tarawih wa al-Zakah and Fusul fi al-Siyam wa al-Tarawih, and has also been incorporated into the author's collected works, Majmu' Fatawa wa Rasa'il al-Uthaymin.
