Fawaid Abi Muhammad al-Fakihi (The Hadith Benefits of Abu Muhammad al-Fakihi) is a hadith tract compiled by the Meccan traditionist Abu Muhammad al-Fakihi (d. 353 AH / 964 CE), gathering narrations transmitted through his teacher Abu Yahya ibn Abi Masarra (d. 279 AH / 892 CE) from his various shaykhs .

Transmission and Content

The work is also titled Hadith Abi Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Fakihi 'an Abi Yahya ibn Abi Masarra 'an Shuyukhih (The Hadith of Abu Muhammad al-Fakihi from Abu Yahya ibn Abi Masarra from His Shaykhs) . Its compiler, Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn al-Abbas al-Fakihi, was an authority in Mecca described by al-Dhahabi as having been the highest-authority surviving transmitter of the city (asnad man baqiya bi-Makkah) and an author of works on Meccan history . Prominent traditionists took hadith from him, including al-Daraqutni in his Sunan and al-Hakim al-Naysaburi in his Mustadrak, alongside figures such as Abu al-Hasan ibn Bushran, Abu Muhammad ibn al-Nahhas, Abu al-Qasim ibn Marwan, Abd Allah ibn Yusuf, and Abu al-Hasan ibn Ishaq al-Bazzaz .

Structure and Method

The entire text is transmitted by al-Fakihi solely through Ibn Abi Masarra from his teachers . A distinguishing structural feature of the collection's chains of narration (isnads) is that Ibn Abi Masarra is explicitly mentioned by name only in the first two hadiths; thereafter, the text records the shaykhs of Ibn Abi Masarra directly without reiterating his intermediate name in each chain, requiring readers to note that those authorities are Ibn Abi Masarra's direct teachers rather than al-Fakihi's .

Publication

The tract was edited and studied by Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Ayid al-Ghabbani and published in Riyadh by Maktabat al-Rushd and Sharikat al-Riyad in 1419 AH / 1998 CE .
