Abu Muhammad al-Fakihi (d. 353 AH / 964 CE) was a Meccan hadith scholar and narrator, known as the primary surviving transmitter of traditions from Abu Yahya ibn Abi Masarra and for his hadith collection Fawaid Abi Muhammad al-Fakihi.

Identity and Lineage

His full name was Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn al-Abbas al-Khuza'i al-Makki al-Fakihi, sometimes shortened in biographical sources to Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Abbas al-Makki al-Fakihi. He was the son of the Meccan historian Abu Abd Allah al-Fakihi (Muhammad ibn Ishaq), the author of Akhbar Makka (Reports of Mecca). The lineage and nisba al-Fakihi traces back to al-Fakih ibn Amr ibn al-Harith from the tribe of Kinana.

Hadith Transmission and Students

Al-Fakihi studied in Mecca under Abu Yahya Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Masarra (d. 278 AH), hearing a substantial corpus of traditions from him in Rabi' al-Awwal 278 AH and becoming the last surviving narrator to transmit directly from him. Because of his longevity and high chains of transmission, he was regarded as the principal traditionalist with the highest isnad in Mecca in his era (asnad man baqiya bi-Makkah). He also served as the transmitter of his father's historical work Akhbar Makka.

His transmissions from Ibn Abi Masarra formed the hadith collection known as Fawaid Abi Muhammad al-Fakihi (also titled Hadith Abi Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Fakihi 'an Abi Yahya ibn Abi Masarra 'an Shuyukhih), which records hadiths received exclusively through that single intermediate teacher.

Numerous prominent scholars and pilgrims attended his circles in Mecca. Among those who narrated from him were al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, al-Daraqutni, Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar ibn al-Nahhas, Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Malik ibn Muhammad ibn Bishran, and Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Bazzaz. Other narrators who took hadiths from him include Abd Allah ibn Yusuf, Abu al-Qasim ibn Marwan, Udayy ibn Abd Allah ibn Adi al-Jurjani, and Fa'iq Amid al-Dawla.

Death

Al-Fakihi continued reciting and dictating hadith in Mecca until his final year, with recorded sessions held in Rabi' al-Awwal 353 AH. He died later that year (353 AH / 964 CE).

List of Works

  • Fawaid Abi Muhammad al-Fakihi is a hadith tract gathering narrations transmitted through the teacher Abu Yahya ibn Abi Masarra from his various shaykhs. Also titled Hadith Abi Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Fakihi 'an Abi Yahya ibn Abi Masarra 'an Shuyukhih, the collection transmits its chains of narration exclusively through Ibn Abi Masarra, explicitly naming him in the first two hadiths before recording his direct teachers thereafter without repeating the intermediate link.
