The work—identified in manuscript title pages as al-Juz' al-Awwal min Fawa'id Abi Bakr al-Qasim ibn Zakariyya al-Mutarriz wa Amalihi al-Qadimah al-Ghara'ib al-Hisan (The First Part of the Benefits and Ancient Fine Rare Dictations of Abu Bakr al-Qasim ibn Zakariyya al-Mutarriz)—belongs to the genre of specialized hadith parts (juz' hadithi) .
The collection compiles traditions narrated with full chains of transmission (isnads) going back through al-Mutarriz and his teachers .
