Life and Education
Abu Bakr al-Qasim ibn Zakariyya ibn Yahya al-Baghdadi, known as al-Mutarriz, was born in Baghdad around 220 AH or slightly earlier . He studied Quranic recitation under prominent authorities of his era, presenting complete recitations to Abu 'Umar al-Duri, Abu Hamdun al-Tayyib, and al-Qasim ibn Yazid al-Wazzan .
In hadith, he studied under a wide circle of scholars, including Suwayd ibn Sa'id, Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah al-Jarjara'i, Ishaq ibn Musa al-Ansari, Abu Hammam al-Walid ibn Shuja', Abu Kurayb, 'Abbad ibn Ya'qub al-Rawajini, and al-Qasim ibn Zakariyya al-Kufi .
Teaching and Students
Al-Mutarriz held formal teaching sessions in Baghdad, instructing students in both Quranic recitation and hadith narration . Among those who studied recitation under him were the renowned scholar Ibn Mujahid, 'Abd al-Wahid ibn Abi Hashim, and Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Ahwazi .
His hadith students included Abu Bakr al-Ji'abi, Muhammad ibn al-Muzaffar, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Ja'far al-Kharqi, and Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn Muhammad al-Zayyat .
Scholarly Standing
Biographers regarded al-Mutarriz as a reliable, authoritative scholar (thiqah hujjah) and a prolific compiler, with explicit commendations noted from figures such as al-Daraqutni . Among his notable compilations are his collection of dictated traditions, al-Fawa'id wa-l-amali ("Instructive Points and Dictations"), and a specialized collection arranged around a single narrator, Musnad Anas ibn Malik min Hadith Humayd al-Tawil .
Death
Al-Mutarriz died in the month of Safar 305 AH (August 917 CE) at an age approaching ninety .
A later transmitter, 'Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Ghadai'ri, claimed to have recited a complete reading of the Quran under al-Mutarriz in 313 AH; biographers dismissed this claim as false because al-Mutarriz had died eight years before that date .
