Fath Rabb al-Bariyya Sharh al-Muqaddima al-Jazariyya fi Ilm al-Tajwid (The Opening of the Lord of Creation: Commentary on the Jazariyya Introduction to the Science of Tajwid) is a commentary by the Quranic recitation scholar Safwat Mahmoud Salim (d. 1443 AH / 2021 CE) on the didactic poem on Quranic phonology and recitation rules, al-Muqaddima al-Jazariyya, composed by Ibn al-Jazari .

Composition and Transmission

Salim composed the work as an elucidation of the verses of al-Muqaddima al-Jazariyya, a poem he received through oral recitation from memory in a single sitting before his teacher Ayman Suwayd, who granted him an authorization (ijazah) with a continuous chain of transmission (isnad) reaching Ibn al-Jazari . During the drafting of the book, Salim dictated the entire text to his wife, Umm Mu'adh, who transcribed it by hand .

Scope and Structure

The commentary follows the thematic layout of the original poem, addressing foundational topics required for correct recitation of the Quran :

  • Articulation points of letters (makharij al-huruf): covering the definition of points of articulation and detailing the seventeen specific exits categorized under five general areas: the oral cavity (al-jawf), the throat (al-halq), the tongue (al-lisan), the lips (al-shafatan), and the nasal passage (al-khayshum) .
  • Phonetic attributes (sifat), rules of pausing and resuming recitation (al-waqf wa-l-ibtida'), the rule of the strongest elongation (aqwa al-mudud), connected and disconnected spellings (al-maqtu' wa-l-mawsul), and the feminine marker written as an open ta' (ta' al-ta'nith) in the Ottoman codices .

In addition to the line-by-line commentary, the book includes a dedicated supplementary appendix covering essential tajwid issues omitted in the text of the Jazariyya . These additions include the rulings on seeking refuge (isti'adha) and the basmala, the lam of the definite article and verbs, the specific constraints required when reciting with shortening of the detached elongation (qasr al-munfasil) alongside medium length of the attached elongation (tawassut al-muttasil), phonetic stress (al-nabr), and the rules governing Quranic certification (al-ijaza al-Qur'aniyya) .

Publication History

The first edition of the work was published in Jeddah in 1422 AH / 2001 CE . Following its exhaustion, Salim prepared an expanded second edition dated 13 Jumada al-Akhira 1424 AH / 11 August 2003 CE, issued by Dar Nur al-Maktabat in 162 pages . The second edition incorporated corrections of typographical errors, reformulations of definitions, expansions of discussions on pausing and elongation, and the supplementary appendix . The revised text was formatted and reviewed by the author's son, Mu'adh Salim, and examined by scholars of Quranic readings in Medina and Jeddah .
