Safwat Mahmoud Salim (d. 1443 AH / 2021–2022 CE) was an Egyptian Quranic reciter and scholar of tajwid, best known for his commentary Fath Rabb al-Bariyya Sharh al-Muqaddima al-Jazariyya fi Ilm al-Tajwid ("The Opening of the Lord of Creation: Commentary on al-Muqaddima al-Jazariyya in the Science of Tajwid").

Education and Teachers

His full name was Safwat Mahmoud Ahmad Salim. He studied the Quran and the recitation sciences under several prominent contemporary scholars. He recited a complete reading (khatma) of the Quran in the narration of Hafs from Asim via the path of the Shatibiyya to Ayman Rushdi Suwayd, who granted him an ijaza with a continuous chain of transmission (isnad) reaching the Prophet ﷺ. He also recited the didactic poem al-Muqaddima al-Jazariyya from memory in a single sitting to Suwayd, receiving an authorization for its text and commentary that traced back to its author, Ibn al-Jazari.

Salim also studied with Adil Ibrahim Abu Sha'r, completing a full recitation of the Quran under him in the narration of Hafs from Asim via the Tayyibat al-Nashr route, as well as a complete recitation in the Ten Recitations via the Shatibiyya and al-Durra routes, receiving ijazas for both.

Teaching and Family

Salim taught and authorized numerous students in Quranic recitation from various countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia, and Eritrea. Among those who received ijazas under his supervision were his sons Ayman, Abd al-Rahman, and Mahmoud.

His family assisted him in his scholarly work; his wife, Umm Mu'adh, handwrote the complete text of Fath Rabb al-Bariyya as he dictated it to her, and his son Mu'adh, who also mastered the Ten Recitations, formatted and reviewed the book for publication. The work was also reviewed by scholars of Quranic recitation in Medina and Jeddah.
