Fatawa Arkan al-Islam (Fatwas on the Pillars of Islam) is a single-volume collection of legal verdicts delivered by Ibn Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) and compiled by Fahd ibn Nasir ibn Ibrahim al-Sulayman .

Scope and Contents

The work gathers Ibn Uthaymin's answers to questions centered around the five fundamental pillars of Islam: Islamic creed (ʿaqidah), prayer (salah), almsgiving (zakah), fasting (siyam), and the pilgrimage (hajj).

The legal inquiries covered across these sections address both classical jurisprudence and contemporary practical issues:

  • Creed and Prayer: Inquiries examine doctrinal questions, the validity of acts of devotion, and congregational and voluntary prayer practices, such as the ruling on reciting supplications upon completing the recitation of the Quran during the night prayer (qiyam al-layl) .
  • Fasting: The rulings address contemporary medical and practical matters, including the use of medicinal asthma inhalers during the daytime of Ramadan without invalidating the fast, the permissibility of applying perfumes and scents, and the regulations regarding acts that necessitate making up a missed fast .
  • Pilgrimage: The collection addresses the performance of Hajj and Umrah, such as the impermissibility of performing voluntary Sa'y outside of a ritual pilgrimage, the classification of tamattuʿ when returning home between rites, and the compensatory sacrifices (dam) required for missing obligatory duties like staying overnight in Mina, stoning the Jamarat, or performing the farewell circumambulation (tawaf al-wadaʿ) .

Publication

The book was published in a single volume by Dar al-Thurayya in Riyadh, with its first edition appearing in 1421 AH (2000–2001 CE), while other records list its first edition under the same publisher in 1423 AH (2002–2003 CE) .
