Fadl Ashr Dhi al-Hijjah (The Virtue of the Ten Days of Dhu al-Hijjah) is a specialized hadith monograph (juzʾ) compiled by the hadith master al-Tabarani (260–360 AH / 873–971 CE), gathering prophetic traditions and reports from early authorities regarding the merits and devotional practices of the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah .

Contents and Structure

The monograph comprises 55 numbered narrations organized under thematic chapter headings with complete chains of transmission (isnad) tracing back to the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions, and the Successors .

The work opens without a separate heading, presenting traditions concerning the superiority of righteous deeds performed during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah over other days of the year . The subsequent sections address:

  • Exegesis of Quranic verses associated with the ten days, including the interpretation of the "known days" ( أَيَّامٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ ) and "numbered days" ( أَيَّامٍ مَعْدُودَاتٍ ) , the forty nights appointed to Moses ( وَوَاعَدْنَا مُوسَى ثَلَاثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَاهَا بِعَشْرٍ ) , the dawn and the ten nights in Surah al-Fajr ( وَالْفَجْرِ * وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ) , and the Even and the Odd ( وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ ) .
  • The virtues of fasting during the ten days and specifically on the Day of Arafah, as well as narrations regarding divine forgiveness on that day .
  • Ritual bathing (ghusl) on the Day of Arafah .
  • Jurisprudential variations on the commencement and conclusion of the takbir proclamations during the festive period, presenting narrations for starting from the Fajr prayer on the Day of Arafah until the Asr prayer of the final day of Tashriq , starting from the Zuhr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice until Fajr of the final day of Tashriq (noted as the position of Malik and al-Shafi'i) , and starting from Zuhr on the Day of Sacrifice until Asr of the final day of Tashriq .
  • Supplications recommended for the Day of Arafah, concluding the text with the supplication of Abdullah ibn Umar .

Transmission and Publication

The surviving transmission of the text is preserved through a chain extending from al-Tabarani via an authorization (ijazah) to Abu Sa'id Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad ibn al-Saffar, down through scholars including the grammarian Ibn Malik, Chief Judge Badr al-Din Ibn Jama'ah, and Izz al-Din Muhammad ibn Abd al-Latif ibn al-Kuwayk .

The work was edited by Abu Abd Allah Ammar ibn Sa'id Tamalat al-Jaza'iri and published by Maktabat al-Amrayn al-Ilmiyyah in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (1st ed., 1420 AH / 1999 CE) .
