Durus li al-Shaykh Atiyya Salim

Durus li al-Shaykh Atiyya Salim (Lessons of Shaykh Atiyya Salim) is a collection of transcribed and audio-recorded lectures delivered by the Egyptian-born Medina scholar and judge Atiyya Muhammad Salim (1346–1420 AH / 1925–1999 CE), delivered primarily at his teaching circle in the Prophet's Mosque in Medina .

Background and Teaching Chair

When the Islamic University of Medina was established, a teaching chair was instituted in its name at the Prophet's Mosque, initially alternated between Muhammad al-Amin al-Shanqiti and Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz . Owing to al-Shanqiti's health conditions, Abd al-Qadir Shayba al-Hamd substituted for him, while Salim assumed the post on behalf of Ibn Baz due to the latter's extensive commitments . Following Shayba al-Hamd's relocation to Riyadh, Salim conducted the lessons at the chair independently, and in later periods was joined by Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hudhayfi . Salim's large gathering at the mosque drew resident students and visiting pilgrims alike .

Content and Scope

Salim's teaching curricula spanned multiple disciplines of Islamic scholarship, focusing on canonical reference texts and instructional manuals :

  • Hadith: He delivered complete commentaries on Muwatta' Malik twice, as well as explanations of Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyya (The Forty Hadith of al-Nawawi) and Bulugh al-Maram by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani .
  • Hadith Terminology: He taught Al-Manzuma al-Bayquniyya (Sharh al-Bayquniyya) .
  • Jurisprudence and Inheritance Law: He explained the inheritance manual Matn al-Rahbiyya in the field of estate division (fara'id) .
  • Legal Theory: He gave a detailed commentary on Matn al-Waraqat by Abu al-Ma'ali al-Juwayni on legal methodology (usul al-fiqh) .
  • Quranic Exegesis and Prophetic Biography: His lessons covered selected portions of the Quran, notably Surah al-Hujurat, the opening of Surah al-Baqarah, and sections of Surah Al 'Imran, alongside distinct sessions devoted to the biography of the Prophet (al-sira al-nabawiyya) and military campaigns (al-ghazawat) .
  • Arabic Rhetoric: He taught the modern manual Al-Balagha al-Wadiha .

Recording and Transmission

The lessons were recorded live on audio cassettes and archived in the Audio Library of the Prophet's Mosque (al-Maktaba al-Sawtiyya bi-al-Masjid al-Nabawi) . The second reading cycle of the Muwatta' alone exceeded 700 audio cassettes, while his commentary on Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyya comprised over seventy cassettes . Several of these audio courses were subsequently transcribed and edited for publication, including his commentary on the Forty Hadith .
