Durrat al-Tanzil wa Ghurrat al-Tawil (The Pearl of Revelation and the Forefront of Interpretation) is a seminal treatise on the rhetorical and semantic harmonization of verbally similar Quranic verses (tawjih al-mutashabih al-lafzi), composed by the Persian philologist and scholar al-Khatib al-Iskafi (d. 420 AH / 1029 CE; another report gives 421 AH) .

Composition and Attribution

The book was dictated by al-Khatib al-Iskafi in the Fakhri Citadel (al-Qal‘a al-Fakhriyya) to his student Ibrahim ibn Ali ibn Muhammad, known as Ibn Abi al-Faraj al-Ardistani, who transcribed the questions and answers directly from his dictation and requested that he preface the work with an impromptu opening sermon .

Classical biographers and bibliographers—including Yaqut al-Hamawi and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti—unanimously credit the work to al-Khatib al-Iskafi under this title . However, attribution debates emerged in modern scholarship because certain manuscript copies titled the work with minor variations (such as Durrat al-Tanzil fi Mutashabih al-Tanzil or Durrat al-Ta'wil wa Ghurrat al-Tanzil) and attributed it to al-Raghib al-Isfahani, while other reports ascribed it to Fakhr al-Din al-Razi or Qawwam al-Sunna . Scholars defending the attribution to al-Iskafi point out that the primary manuscript tradition explicitly carries his name and title, contains the transmission testimony of Ibn Abi al-Faraj al-Ardistani, and matches citations recorded by early scholars .

Scope and Method

The primary subject of the work is the explication of parallel or recurring verses in the Quran that share common phrasing but differ through variations in vocabulary, word order (precedence and postponement, al-taqdim wa-al-ta'khir), omission, or addition . Al-Iskafi intended the book to demonstrate the precision of Quranic phrasing and to answer objections or doubts that skeptics might raise regarding perceived redundancies or discrepancies across passages .

The treatise is arranged sequentially according to the order of the Quranic surahs, beginning with Surah al-Baqarah . Al-Iskafi structures his analysis through a pedagogical query-and-response format: he formulates an inquiry highlighting why a specific phrase or syntactic order occurs in one surah while differing in a comparable passage elsewhere, followed by a detailed exegetical and linguistic answer rooted in the surrounding textual context and thematic focus of each surah . His style relies on accessible literary and grammatical arguments drawn from his philological expertise .

Reception and Influence

Durrat al-Tanzil is regarded as the earliest dedicated text to systematically explore the rationale of verbal variants across the Quran . Later scholars writing on the same discipline drew heavily upon its contents:

  • Burhan al-Din al-Kirmani (d. 500 AH) cited al-Iskafi by name in sixteen places in his treatise al-Burhan fi Mutashabih al-Qur'an, while adopting many of his explanations verbatim elsewhere .
  • Ibn al-Zubayr al-Gharnati (d. 708 AH) praised the work in the introduction to his Milak al-Ta'wil, noting that al-Iskafi was the first to unlock this field and establish its principles .
  • Shihab al-Din al-Khafaji stated in his supercommentary on al-Baydawi's tafsir that al-Iskafi was the trailblazer in this discipline, advising readers seeking detailed explanations of subtle phrasing distinctions to consult Durrat al-Tanzil .
  • Later exegetes, such as Mahmud al-Alusi in Ruh al-Ma'ani, frequently quoted and summarized al-Iskafi's interpretations of ambiguous and parallel passages .

Printed Editions

The work was first printed in Cairo under the supervision of Abd al-Mu'ti al-Saqqa, followed by a second Egyptian printing in 1327 AH / 1909 CE funded by Ahmad Naji al-Jamali and Muhammad Amin al-Khanji . It was later reprinted in Beirut by Dar al-Afaq al-Jadida in 1973 and 1979 CE . A critical doctoral edition prepared by Muhammad Mustafa Aydin under the supervision of Abd al-Sattar Fath Allah Sa'id was published by Umm al-Qura University in Mecca in 1422 AH / 2001 CE .
