Abu Abd Allah al-Khatib al-Iskafi (d. 420 AH / 1029 CE) was an Arabic philologist, lexicographer, and preacher from Isfahan who served in Rayy, best known for his linguistic manual Mabadi' al-Lugha and his treatise on Quranic stylistic variations Durrat al-Tanzil wa-Ghurrat al-Ta'wil.

Life and Career

His full name was Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Khatib al-Iskafi. Originating from Isfahan, he initially practiced the trade of a shoemaker or cobbler (iskāf) before dedicating himself to the pursuit of scholarship, studying under the teachers of his generation in his hometown. He entered the circle of the Buyid vizier and man of letters al-Sahib Ibn Abbad as one of his companions. Al-Iskafi was later appointed to deliver the Friday sermons as a public preacher (khatīb) in Rayy, serving at the citadel known as al-Qal'a al-Fakhriyya, which earned him the honorific al-Khatib.

Standing and Intellectual Contribution

Al-Iskafi was widely acknowledged for his expertise in Arabic grammar, lexicography, and rhetorical exegesis. Al-Sahib Ibn Abbad highlighted his scholarly attainment alongside two other craftsmen-turned-scholars of Isfahan, remarking: "Three men from Isfahan achieved triumph in knowledge: a weaver, a carder, and a cobbler. The weaver was Abu Ali al-Marzuqi, the carder was Abu Mansur Ibn Mashadha, and the cobbler was Abu Abd Allah al-Khatib."

His prominence rested largely on works demonstrating fine semantic discrimination, notably his lexicographical treatise Mabadi' al-Lugha and his Quranic study Durrat al-Tanzil wa-Ghurrat al-Ta'wil, which systematically analyzed verbally similar and recurring verses (al-mutashabih al-lafzi) to elucidate their contextual and rhetorical distinctions.

Death

Al-Iskafi died in 420 AH (1029 CE), though another report places his death in 421 AH (1030 CE).
