Biblughrafiya li-Kutub al-Hadith wa al-Sunna bi al-Lugha al-Inkiliziyya (A Bibliography on Hadith and Sunnah Writings in English) is a reference bibliography compiled by Suhayb bin Abd al-Ghaffar Hasan in 1424 AH / 2003 CE, documenting English-language literature on Hadith and the Prophetic Sunnah .
Background and Composition
The work was prepared as a research paper for an international scholarly conference organized by the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran in Medina concerning the Sunnah and biography of the Prophet . Hasan conducted the research over a three-month period beginning in March 2003 at the library of the Islamic Cultural Centre in London . In compiling materials, he visited and consulted collections across multiple institutions and locations, including the International Islamic University in Islamabad, bookshops in Lahore, the Da‘wah office in Bahrain, King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, and the Islamic Foundation in Leicester . The bibliography was completed in London on 30 Rabi‘ al-Akhir 1424 AH / 30 June 2003 CE .
Sources and Scope
The bibliography was designed primarily to update and build upon two foundational bibliographies published in 1980–1981 :
- Literature on Hadith in European Languages (1981) by Ahmad von Denffer, published by the Islamic Foundation, which contained 559 entries with approximately 360 in English .
- Hadith and Sira Literature in Western Languages (Bloomington, 1980) by Muhammad Anees and Alia Nasreen Athar .
Hasan sought to incorporate the earlier material while systematically documenting English-language publications that appeared between 1980 and June 2003, encompassing books, translations of primary Hadith compilations, academic treatises, journal articles, and chapters across both Muslim scholarship and Western Orientalist studies .
Structure and Method
Entries in the bibliography are organized alphabetically by author, with book titles rendered in bold type and journal articles or book chapters in italics so that an author's works appear together . Standard abbreviations are employed for cited periodicals . Each entry is assigned a three-letter code classifying its subject matter into one of seven categories :
- AUT (Authenticity): Works addressing the authority and authenticity of the Sunnah, including debates over isnad (chains of transmission) and matn (textual content) .
- CAT (Catalogue): Catalogues of Arabic manuscripts and bibliographical indexes .
- CRI (Criticism): Studies attacking or defending the traditional science of Hadith, largely consisting of Western Orientalist literature .
- TAD (Tadwin): Works concerning the compilation and textual recording of Hadith, as well as biographical studies of narrators .
- TXT (Text): English translations of original Arabic Hadith collections and anthologies .
- USU (Usul): Studies dealing with Hadith terminology and principles of Hadith methodology (mustalah al-hadith) .
- WRI (Writings): General works on Islamic subjects that address specific aspects of Hadith and the Sunnah .
