Awn al-Matin ala Nazm Risalat al-Qarawiyyin (The Strong Aid upon the Versification of the Epistle of al-Qayrawani) is a contemporary Maliki legal commentary authored by Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mustafa al-Yaqubi on his own didactic poem that versifies the classic legal manual al-Risalah by Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani .
Background and Composition
The author—whose full lineage is given as Muhammad ibn Muhammad Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Mustafa ibn Sidi Muhammad (known as Dayya) al-Yaqubi al-A'mami—initially composed a versification of Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani's al-Risalah . He undertook the poetic rendering to cover its legal rulings clearly and facilitate its memorization, observing that prose is harder to commit to memory despite the book's great importance in the Maliki school . Following repeated requests from students and teachers to author an accompanying commentary that would resolve ambiguities, clarify the original author's intent, and provide legal reasoning (tawjih) for the positions presented, he composed Awn al-Matin .
The author completed the work in Kiffa on 23 Rabi' al-Awwal 1441 AH (seven nights remaining in the month; November 2019 CE) .
