Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mustafa al-Yaqubi is a Maliki jurist and scholar of legal theory, known for his legal commentary Awn al-Matin ala Nazm Risalat al-Qarawiyyin and his gloss Fath al-Baqi ala Manzumat al-Maraqi.

Lineage

His full name is recorded as Muhammad ibn Muhammad Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Mustafa ibn Dayya al-Yaqubi al-A'mami. He identified Abdullah ibn al-Hajj Ibrahim al-Alawi, the author of the didactic poem Maraqi al-Su'ud, as his grandfather.

Scholarly contribution

Al-Yaqubi composed a didactic versification of al-Risalah, the legal manual by Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani, seeking to encompass its legal questions clearly in verse due to the difficulty of memorizing prose and the high standing of the manual in the Maliki school. Following persistent requests from students and teachers, he subsequently wrote an explanatory commentary on his poem titled Awn al-Matin ala Nazm Risalat al-Qarawiyyin to resolve ambiguities, unlock difficult passages, clarify Ibn Abi Zayd's intent, and provide legal reasoning for his positions.

In legal theory (Usul al-Fiqh), al-Yaqubi wrote Fath al-Baqi ala Manzumat al-Maraqi, a concise gloss on Maraqi al-Su'ud prepared in response to student requests. In this work, he relied on primary commentaries on the poem—principally the author's own commentary Nashr al-Bunud ala Maraqi al-Su'ud and the explanations of Shaykh Abb and Shaykh Abah—as well as foundational treatises such as Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi's Tanqih al-Fusul and its commentary, Abu al-Walid al-Baji's al-Isharah, Muhammad al-Tahir ibn Ashur's marginalia on Tanqih al-Fusul, and Muhammad ibn Ali al-Shawkani's Irshad al-Fuhul.
