Athar Tarikh al-Nass al-Hadithi fi Tawjih al-Maani (The Impact of the History of the Hadith Text on Directing Meanings) is an applied academic treatise by Yusuf bin Jawda al-Dawudi on hadith hermeneutics and the chronological contextualization of prophetic traditions . It was published as an offprint in the Yearbook of the Faculty of Usul al-Din and Da'wa in Menoufia at Al-Azhar University in 1438 AH / 2017 CE .

Scope and Objectives

The work investigates the role of textual chronology—defined as the precise time in which a prophetic saying, action, or tacit approval occurred during the era of prophethood, along with its associated events and circumstances—in guiding the interpretation of prophetic hadith . Al-Dawudi argues that the utility of hadith chronology among classical commentators is far broader and deeper than merely determining legal abrogation (al-nasikh wa-l-mansukh) . Instead, establishing textual timelines functions as an essential hermeneutical tool for proper comprehension, legal deduction, reconciling conflicting narrations, clarifying textual obscurities, and determining the scope of semantic indication .

To substantiate this thesis, the author draws on three classical commentaries as representative case studies: Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, al-Minhaj by al-Nawawi, and al-Istidhkar by Ibn Abd al-Barr .

Structure

The study comprises an introduction, six substantive chapters, and a conclusion :

  • Introduction: Details the subject's importance, problem statement, literature review, scope, methodology, and outline .
  • Chapter 1: Explores the concept of text chronology in prophetic hadith and its historical connection to events in the prophetic era .
  • Chapter 2: Examines the impact of textual chronology on correct comprehension and sound legal deduction .
  • Chapter 3: Addresses its role in reconciling or weighing between conflicting texts .
  • Chapter 4: Analyzes the clarification of obscure or problematic wording (al-mushkil) in hadith matns through historical dating .
  • Chapter 5: Demonstrates how chronology helps establish or refute whether an incident occurred more than once .
  • Chapter 6: Treats the direction of hadith semantics (dalala) through chronological context .
  • Conclusion: Summarizes findings and recommendations .

Method and Sources

The author employs an inductive and descriptive-analytical method . Within each thematic axis, three practical examples are examined . The author cites hadiths from the core commentaries with abridged chains of transmission while noting the Companion narrator, defines the thematic concept and its relation to text history, and quotes and analyzes the commentator's reasoning . Historical dates are verified against standard biographical and historical references; where dates diverge, a preferred date is selected based on evidence, the assessments of hadith verifiers, and consensus among scholars of prophetic biography .
