al-Ziyadat fi Kitab al-Jud wa al-Sakha ("Additions to the Book of Generosity and Munificence") is a hadith tract compiled by the traditionalist al-Tabarani (d. 360 AH / 971 CE) that gathers traditions, historical reports, and poetry on the virtues and manifestations of open-handedness and liberality .
Transmission and Structure
The work constitutes the second part (al-juz' al-thani) and supplementary additions (ziyadat) to al-Tabarani's broader treatise on generosity (Kitab al-Jud wa al-Sakha) . Ibn Mandah listed Kitab al-Jud wa al-Sakha among al-Tabarani's single-part compositions (juz'), and al-Sam'ani recorded Kitab al-Jud among the works transmitted from al-Tabarani through his student Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani .
The extant text is preserved through the transmission chain running from al-Tabarani to Abu Nu'aym Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Hafiz, and from him to the Qur'anic reader Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Haddad, before whom the text was recited in Jumada al-Ula 514 AH .
Contents
The collection presents chained transmissions narrating exemplary instances of liberality, charity, and hospitality among the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, early Companions, and subsequent generations . It opens with the report wherein the Prophet ﷺ asked Banu Salimah about their chief; when they named Jadd ibn Qays despite noting his miserliness, the Prophet ﷺ remarked on the vice of stinginess and named Amr ibn al-Jamu' as their leader on account of his generosity, followed by verses composed by their poet commemorating the incident .
Subsequent reports document acts of lavish giving and detachment from wealth, including:
- Talha ibn Ubayd Allah dispensing seven hundred thousand dirhams throughout the streets of Medina before dawn after selling a property to Uthman ibn Affan .
- Ali ibn Abi Talib giving away even the rug he sat upon .
- Abd Allah ibn Abbas maintaining a household known for abundant bread, meat, and knowledge .
- Abd Allah ibn Ja'far distributing substantial wealth, including an oversized sugar block sent to him by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, which he had broken apart and distributed to the public .
- Al-Husayn ibn Ali bringing the poor and indigent into his home to share fine food and perfume prepared for him .
- A'isha donating seventy thousand dirhams while wearing a patched garment .
- Anecdotes involving later scholars such as Sufyan ibn Uyaynah providing funds to relatives .
Publication
The tract was edited by Dr. Amir Hasan Sabri and published by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut (first edition, 1423 AH / 2003 CE) as the twenty-second entry in their series of hadith parts (Silsilat al-Ajza' wa al-Kutub al-Hadithiyyah), issued within a compilation containing three hadith treatises .
