al-Zawaj (Arabic: الزواج, lit. 'Marriage') is a short treatise on marriage and social guidance by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .
Origin and Publication
The treatise originated as a lecture delivered by al-Uthaymin during the cultural lecture season organized for the Colleges of Sharia and Arabic Language in al-Qasim . It was subsequently published as an independent booklet, including a second edition issued by Dar al-Watan in Riyadh in 1410 AH, spanning 46 pages in a 17×14 cm format .
Contents and Themes
In the opening of the work, al-Uthaymin addresses ideological, moral, and doctrinal challenges facing the Muslim community, underscoring the necessity for scholars and religious authorities to coordinate their efforts to counteract harmful influences . He emphasizes several societal responsibilities:
- Offering sincere counsel to Muslim authorities both openly and privately .
- The duty of mosque imams to educate the general public regarding essential matters of their religion .
- Overcoming alienation between elders and younger generations, warning that dismissing youth drives them toward confusion and misguidance .
- Directing educators—particularly at the university level—to combine legal rulings with their textual proofs and underlying wisdoms (ḥikmah), cautioning against presenting religious rulings in a dry or unsubstantiated manner .
